Steve Harrison “Julia Cup”
Fifty pieces of the Julia Cup by British potter Steve Harrison have arrived. Each is a new creation, specially crafted for ARTS&SCIENCE’s 2024 holiday season. A select few feature unique combinations of clay and glaze, available in limited quantities.
From Friday, December 20, the collection will be presented at both OVER THE COUNTER in Tokyo and HIN in Kyoto. This is a rare opportunity to view these exceptional pieces, and we look forward to welcoming you.
Julia Cup
“The joy of a sketchbook is in the freedom to explore. The 50 Julia cups that make up this body of work are a celebration of applying this same freedom to my making, working not to arrive at a resolution, but to find a different vocabulary.
For the last 20 years, the bulbous form of the Julia cup had remained the same; its shape a response to my wife’s request for a cup to keep her tea hot. With this body of work, it is almost as if the Julia cup has caught up with the progressive evolution of all my other cups in an instant, transforming from something simple to something extraordinary.
I always look for resolutions in the practicalities of what can and cannot be achieved. By omitting this from my making, I have retained the same excitement that belongs in the sketchbook. This work is not only a different way of making, but also a different way of seeing. How interesting that it has come from something that has remained so consistent for so long?”
