The exhibition “Nanako” by painter, calligrapher, and potter Kenichi Takanaka is currently on view at AT THE CORNER. We hope you will stop in to see it.
Kenichi Takanaka was born in Toride-shi, Ibaraki in 1966. In his early twenties, his oil paintings were accepted for a NIKI exhibition. He set up his own kiln and studio in Otaki, Chiba in 1993. His work portrays his life with his dogs, cats, goats, pigs, and hens in the mountains of Otaki,
Mr. Takanaka has developed his individual sensibility as an artist through his studies of Chinese books, ink brush painting, and ceramics. In recent years, his work has developed a comical note, which is evident in this exhibition.
”Nanako” is a method of creating a relief pattern that resembles fish roe, using a special chisel with a concave tip. Normally applied to metal, Takanaka has extended the technique to his ceramic work, a feat that requires an exceptional technique. He must work the pattern into the surface of the clay before it dries.
After the exhibition at AT THE CORNER, it will tour Hin / Arts & Science, Nijodori Kyoto. Mr. Takanaka will be available in Kyoto for the opening day on September 23rd. Looking forward to see you there.
