A&S 2026SS – SHIMAZOME
At ARTS&SCIENCE, we continue to explore naturally dyed fabrics each spring/summer season.
This season, we introduce SHIMAZOME and SHIMAZOME SHIBORI, presented with items crafted from these fabrics, by applying the traditional dyeing techniques of Amami Ōshima, including dorozome (mud dyeing), in an exploration of new colors and techniques.
SHIMAZOME and SHIMAZOME SHIBORI are natural dyeing techniques in which overlapping layers of color created through successive dyeing processes, and tonal contrast produced through shibori (resist-dyeing technique), each give rise to distinct, richly varied expressions. The items introduced this season are crafted from lightweight materials such as cotton lawn and linen, capturing the subtle variations and chance effects inherent in the dyeing process. Enjoy the way the fabrics’ texture and character gradually evolve over time.
SHIMAZOME
SHIMAZOME is based on Amami’s traditional dorozome (mud dyeing), which produces color through a reaction between tannins extracted from Teichigi (sharinbai, a member of the rose family) and iron in mud fields. The dyeing and drying processes are repeated several times entirely by hand. Through this repeated process, deep and complex tones emerge.

SHIMAZOME SHIBORI
SHIMAZOME SHIBORI combines the SHIMAZOME dyeing process with shibori techniques. The fabric is pinched and gathered into bundles, then placed in a net before dyeing. This creates resist-dyed areas and tonal contrasts, bringing out a more dimensional, sculptural quality.
