Original Hanging Towel

The ideology of Arts & Science since its beginning in 2003 is to equally value the clothes that complement people and the daily necessities that enrich everyday life. The Home Collection was born from this concept. At first glance the items can seem very simple, however at A&S the selected materials and development is always committed to detail. Currently, our entire Home collection is available at A&S Daikanyama. This feature reflects on the story of the A&S original towel series and our newly developed navy dye.

STORY

In western cultures usually the bathroom is an extended area of your personal bedroom and the towels hung in this special space are often perceived as an interior decor. Arts & Science owner, Sonya Park, who spent her childhood in the United States relates with this culture and has a deep passion about her personal bath towels she uses and touches every day. When the first Arts & Science shop opened in 2003, she had chosen a brand of towels from the South of France made with 100% Egyptian cotton. The towels were excellent in terms of texture and function and Park believed because as it is an item you use every day choosing the right towel will change your routine, the quality of your life. Sadly, the manufacturer eventually discontinued making them. This was the moment when Park decided to start an original production in collaboration with a domestic manufacturer, “Imabari.” After a long period of development together, the original towel series from A&S was born.

ABOUT

This towel series consists of bath towels, face towels, and hanging cloths. The creation was inspired by a solid European-style pile combined with an A&S request to use linen in order to enhance functionality.

Our bath towels and face towels are made with pile structures that use high-quality linen as the base material. Tangüis cotton* in strong twisted ply is used for the pile on the surface, and this layer is made with longer strands for a high-water absorption rate and a dry touch. The linen is from French manufacturer Saffilan* and used as the ground layer of the base. The linen is well known for its quick-dry feature and hygienic purposes. The perfect combination of cotton and linen makes the towel water-absorbent, quick-drying and soft to the touch. In terms of design, the hem is a simple fringe. By applying a unique stone washing process* to the finish, the texture and water absorption of the raw materials are enhanced.

Our hanging cloth is an item that uses the base design of the pile towel. You can clearly experience the excellent water absorption and quick-drying properties, along with the direct texture of the linen from French Saffilan. * The hanging towel has a wide range of uses in its simple form as a cloth without piles. The design also features a hem with fringes.

*Tangüis cotton:
Cotton suitable for towels with a hollow feature that contains a large volume of air and known for its rich bulkiness, grown specifically in the land of Peru, where the severe temperature difference can make develop this type of cotton. The finish is done it with a thick strong twisted ply, and the pile naturally separates, giving the outcome a smooth and dry touch.
*Saffilan:
“Saffilan” has been established in 1778. A linen spun manufacturer with a brilliant history for protection by Pope Louis XVI and Napoleon. Rooted in northern France, the world’s leading flux (linen grass) source, we have been spinning fine linens for 230 years. Currently, once of only three companies in Europe that can spin linen.
*stone washing process:
A carefully washed process done over time using pure underground water from the Ishizuchi Mountains, which is also used as drinking water. Enzymes are used to decompose excess oil that has adhered to the towel, resulting in a soft and highly absorbent towel. A process that does not harm the environment.
