- Q1: What kind of work do you do?
-
Ans.
Metal work and vessel restoration.
-
- Q2: Why do you do what you do for a living? What made you choose it and what attracted you to it?
-
Ans.
When I restore vessels using traditional techniques and materials, I feel that even my own mind and body are healed and conditioned through the process.Urushi lacquer is moody and also not the easiest material to handle, which is actually what I find attractive about it. There is a lot to learn from urushi.
-
- Q3: Please tell us about the path you took into your current occupation.
-
Ans.
I studied urushi lacquer painting and Japanese maki-e (gold-relief lacquerware) in my art classes in high school. I had been away from the urushi craft for a long time, but some years ago, I reunited with the material as I started kintsugi (the art of fixing broken pottery with a lacquer resin infused with powdered gold).
-
- Q4: What does wearing clothes mean to you?
-
Ans.
It is one of my favorite things. Sometimes it’s about getting to know yourself and training yourself. I would like to dress as if I am dancing.
