A&S Natural Dyeing vol.2
“Kasane-zome,” or “layered dying,” is an original Arts & Science method of natural dyeing. Our commitment is to only use the finest dyes and the entire process takes place in Japan. In this feature we will focus on this all-natural dyeing method, one of the main focuses in our SS20 collection launching in April.

The “Kasane-zome” technique
“Hon Ai-zome” is the base of our dying expression that we have been skillful with since our first A&S collection in 2008. We carry on the Japanese traditional technique of combining fermented indigo leaves – “Sukumo,” with lye of charcoal, and Japanese sake and/or wheat skin – “Fusuma.” This is called, “Aku Hakkou Da-te.” (Aku = lye of charcoal, Hakkou =ferment, Da-te = based). There are no chemicals involved in the process, only the finest natural raw materials are used, assuring the safety for the craftsman and the environment. At A&S we value this aspect of the traditional Japanese dyeing style.
The raw materials used to make liquid dye of indigo. From left to right, indigo leaves, fermented indigo leaves – “Sukumo,” and wheat skin – “Fusuma.”
In addition, an extra dyeing process is layered on this first dye. This is what we call, the “Kasane-zome” technique. A natural color dye from pine soot or ochre is layered on the fabrics, all done by craftsmen handmade in an independent factory. This pigment from the natural environment sinks deeply into the fabric, allowing infinite ways to show the depth and variety of color saturation which changes its expression in each light of day. When visiting our shops, please take the time to see this beautiful expression at display.
AI-SUSU (Charcoal dye)
Dying a combination of indigo and charcoal made from burning pine, which consists of a high content of resin, allows us to produce a darker blackish color depending on the carbon density. The charcoal layer will gradually wear and more of the indigo color will be present. The individual wear and fading effect can be enjoyed over time on these dyed garments.

AI-OUDO (Ochre dye)
This natural pigment is made from strong yellow soil, ochre, which is mainly used as a coloring agent for Bingata dyeing (a technique that roots in Okinawa). We layer this dye with a shade of indigo. It is characterized by a deep green color, and you can enjoy the color transformation through age.
