This feature will focus on blouses and stoles using a traditional Japanese dyeing method called itajime which is unique for its eye-catching pattern.

Itajime is one of many tie-dyeing methods where you bind a fabric between engraved wooden blocks called hangi. Since the dye does not penetrate through these tightly bound blocks, a unique pattern can be achieved according to the shape of the block. Countless variations can be made by changing the way of folding the fabric and soaking them in dye. The result is obtained by skilled artisans through a meticulous and time consuming process.

At A&S, we used a narrow hangi (17cm x 75cm) with patterns engraved on the surface which are normally used to dye traditional kasuri fabrics. By using such method, we were able to create a complex and refined pattern which cannot be found in ordinary itajime. The dye is made from sukumo, a fermented natural dye from Tokushima, to realize a unique gradation of colors.

All items shown here are made from our classic fabrics in light woven Xinjian cotton. This cotton is known as the world’s top three extra-long staple cotton. The combination of the color of the ai displayed by the itajime and the lightness of the fabric gives off a refreshing impression. Please come and see them at our stores.
