amachi. × A&S Collaboration vol.2
“amachi.”, the men’s apparel brand created by the designer Yoshimoto Amachi, has been part of our collection from the previous season. For the 2019SS season, we bring you a new experiment focusing on “A&S items created from amachi.’s perspective” together with a collaboration project titled “Re SERIES” which feature items using original stitching. We also introduce you to amachi.’s original collection “amachi. Collection 004 — Plant Succession”.
In the coming collaboration, we express a unique world, which originates from the observation of plants, through the use of space. The event will take place concurrently at &SHOP in Tokyo and Kyoto.

amachi. × A&S – Water Embroidery
By adding a touch of amachi. to already finished A&S items, pieces in the collection were able to obtain the qualities of amachi. and A&S. By carefully observing A&S garments from various angles, each piece was made to create a harmony with amachi.’s handcrafts. New stitches including Water Embroidery, Grass Embroidery and two more have joined the collection.
Animal Trail Embroidery
Animal trails that you suddenly come upon in forests, fields and bushes are all traces of movement. If there was an animal trail in the city, it might as well be a path filled with lush plants and flowers. Such image was the inspiration behind this linear and long threaded stitching.
A grassy bush-like texture is born by intentionally entwining the yarns. amachi. × A&S – Animal Trail Embroidery
Intersection Embroidery
While keeping a harmony between the base fabric, linear stitching is added to the check pattern. This creates an image of adding new layers which give the texture a certain depth.
New layers are born when the nature of the fabric meets new stitches. amachi. × A&S – Intersection Embroidery
“A&S Items Created From amachi.’s Perspective”
During the previous collaboration with A&S, Yoshimoto was deeply impressed by our approach towards garments which he experienced through interacting with customers and staffs. Yoshimoto was fascinated by our way of naturally blending garments with individual ways of life, as if each person’s universe keeps its balance through garments in a specific way. The latest collaboration was born from his idea: wouldn’t it be interesting to create garments which focus on specific actions of our daily lives?
“Stroll Pants” literally means “pants that you want to wear when you go on a stroll”. The pocket which comes with a gusset is detachable and can also be used independently with an accessory fabric typed shoulder stripe.
Work pants have repeatedly been presented throughout the season as amachi.’s classic piece. This item was inspired from “forest workwear” and was created for Yoshimoto’s friend who works for a forest union. The work pants derive from the same design. For Yoshimoto, the daily routine of taking a stroll is extremely important for his creative process. He selected items from A&S collection that he wished to take along with his stroll. This led to the creation of a detachable pocket which can also be used as a shoulder bag. All you need to store in this pocket is a notebook, paperback novel, pens, key and nothing more. Our latest cotton gaberdine fabric from the 2019SS collection gives this piece a unique allure.
The gusset pocket is detachable. (Book cover, pen, keyrings are sold separately) The width of the hem is adjustable between three levels.
amachi. Collection 004 — Plant Succession
2019SS 「amachi. Collection 004 — Plant Succession」
“Collection003 — Forest Fire”, which was presented during the 2018AW season, was inspired from a forest fire which Yoshimoto experienced in his youth. The following “Collection004” from 2019SS depicts a bare land which was hit by a forest fire. The collection features the theme of rebirth by following the resurrection process of the forest. Climax is a word used to describe a stable condition where the vegetation has reached its maximum growth. In case of forests, two to three centuries are necessary for a bare land to reach its climax. This collection was created by learning and observing how the vegetation learns to become a forest through various steps. For example, Yoshimoto used a microscope photograph of a moss: the first vegetation to grown on bare soil. He used its microscopic construction as motifs for his handmade knits and plant sketches created by the Japanese researcher and environmentalist, Minakata Kumagusu, to be used for his handprinted fabrics. He also used greens in various hues which set the tone of the whole collection as well as vines and their spiral constructions in his stitches to recreate a layer which makes a forest.
