    Kenichi Takanaka “Nanako vol.3”

From Friday, September 13th through Monday, 23rd (Japanese national holiday), HIN Arts & Science Nijodori Kyoto will be hosting our fourth exhibition featuring Kenichi Takanaka.

Takanaka is known for the use of various techniques such as painting and inlaying, but for this exhibition, we will mainly focus on his “nanako”, which uses a graver to hammer small circular patterns on the earthenware. Some patterns will also feature sceneries which the artist saw as he walked through towns and characters he loved when he was a child. Takanaka says that in recent years, he was finally able to fulfill his free expression which transcended many differences. Please don’t miss this occasion to experience his works.

One early morning, I was reading Li Bai’s poem out loud in my study with the window fully open when a white-eye came to a mulberry tree in front of the window and started pecking on the blackened berries. It was so near that I could almost touch it. But the bird was busy pecking and didn’t seem to mind my voice at all. Leaving my feeling of joy aside, I decided I should be like the bird
    and concentrated on Li’s poem.

    Steve Harrison Exhibition 2019

ARTS&SCIENCE brings you two different exhibitions titled “BIG IN JAPAN” and “TRAVELLING WITH TEA” featuring the English potter, Steve Harrison which will take place simultaneously at our venues in Tokyo and Kyoto.

“AT THE CORNER” in Tokyo welcomes the exhibition “BIG IN JAPAN”. The event sheds light on Harrison’s compilation in which he pursued the study of proportion for about two years. We will exhibit Harrison’s works which challenged the question: What will happen if we enlarged each piece according to same proportions? Together with the exhibition, a newspaper-sized catalogue featuring Harrison’s 53 works will also be available for sale.

At “A&S Kyoto Bekkan”, we bring you the exhibition “TRAVELLING WITH TEA” which was held in U.K. at the end of 2018. The event will feature a case which was exclusively created by the U.K. based luggage brand GLOBE-TROTTER uniquely for Harrison and his tea case made to store his tea equipment. The event is the fruit of Harrison’s adventure about travelling with tea, which he has been pursuing for more than 30 years.

A&S will be hosting the long-awaited Harrison’s exhibition which was last held nearly two years ago. Through our exhibitions, visitors will be able to enjoy various works created upon different themes. Harrison will be present on both opening days at our two venues (Friday, April 26th in Tokyo / Sunday, April 28th in Kyoto). We look forward to seeing you there.

Following last year, “AT THE CORNER” welcomes the wood carving artist, Tomoya Arai for his exhibition and sales event.

Arai is an autodidact in the handling of wood and lacquer. His creative process is full of originality and freedom. While his works such as bowls and spoons feature scars made during the carving process, each piece have a rough yet refined allure. His works are made to serve as “tools” for the everyday life and each piece is unique. During his time away from his creative process, Arai plows the field and enjoys living with what nature offers him. Please do not miss this chance to see his collection.
We look forward to your visit.

The artist is scheduled to be present at the venue on Saturday, March 23rd.

“SHOES and THINGS” in Tokyo and “CORNER” in Kyoto will host a pattern-order event featuring items using crocodile leathers. Including new shapes, we bring you a selection of pieces which can be enjoyed throughout your “daily life”.

At A&S, we work with a Japanese traditional tanner who specializes in reptile leathers. Each leather is created by the tanner with more than 50 processes including tanning, dyeing and finishing which takes about 3 months. For the finishing process, a globally rare process is used to create leathers with softer textures. Being richly oiled to the core, each leather has an allure which deepens with continued use which is characteristic to A&S. Due to the uniqueness of the material itself, there are only about 20 companies worldwide who can handle them. Please come and experience the texture of crocodile leather carefully tanned by skilled artisans over time.

*Leathers used to make these items are imported in accordance to the Washington Convention. Not limited to leathers, all other parts will be put to use.

Kenichi Takanaka – Nanako Part 2

On top of a mountain looking over a lake, there stands a traditional house with no running water nor gas. In this self-sufficient environment lives the potter, the painter and the chirographer: Kenichi Takanaka. With his family and a dozen or so farm animals including goats, pigs and chickens, Takanaka expresses what happens in his everyday life in his artwork.

Once again, A&S is hosting Takanaka’s exhibition in Tokyo and Kyoto. Using a toreutic technique which uses a graver to hammer small circular patterns, Takanaka creates “nanako” earthenware and vases. Along with these works, his hanging scroll made in collaboration with A&S will also be exhibited. Please come and enjoy the unique world celebrating the fusion of meticulous craftsmanship and witty motifs.

At the bottom of the valley, dogs bark and monkeys squeak.
On top of the mountain is myself, practicing zazen with my wife nearby.
Without any sound of its wings, an owl silently passes by
the left side of my wife
to disappear into the glorious morning sun rising above the mountain…
Today is going to be another fine day! ——— Kenichi Takanaka
