    Kenichi Takanaka “Takanaka Kaiju Encyclopedia”

*Please note that visitors with appointments will be be given priority. Details on how to make reservations are provided below.

Kenichi Takanaka, who produces various works as a acknowledged painter, calligrapher, and potter, will hold a special exhibition at HIN / Arts & Science in Kyoto and OVER THE COUNTER in Tokyo.

This special project with Takanaka is an annual event at Arts & Science. This year, in addition to pottery and paintings, books published independently by the artist all under the theme “Takanaka Kaiju Encyclopedia,” will be unveiled for the first time. We invite you to discover the world of Kenichi Takanaka, who immerses himself in studying and pondering classical Oriental literature amidst the harsh but rich environment of the mountains, and who continues to devote himself more and more freely to his creative work, following his passion.

I am fond of kaiju - monsters. I also like monsters that fight other monsters. And I like monster figures, but only those produced by Marusan and Bullmark in 1966, the year I was born, and the following few years. I don’t find the ones produced after that period to be interesting. When I was a child, I used to play pretend and hold battles among my monster figures in the sandbox in the yard and during bath time, making sounds like “Gao” (“Roar”) and “Dokan” (“Boom”) by myself... When I think about it now, that was everything. The me of fifty years ago, irreplaceable, is this me. ―Kenichi Takanaka

Masao Kozumi Exhibition: “Carafes and Vessels”

*Reservations are required for this event. For details, please see the detailed instructions at the end of the page.

The exhibition "Carafes and Vessels" by glass artist Masao Kozumi will be held at OVER THE COUNTER in Tokyo and HIN / Arts & Science in Kyoto.
In this exhibition, we will introduce Kozumi’s new works including carafes and cups especially made for Arts & Science. The entire process, from developing the concepts to creating the final shape, took almost one year, and the works were born through trial and error. With his essential lines of work upfront, we have also commissioned several types of glass that are not usually produced, including a new shade of green glass bottles, Onggis, parfait glasses and classic Japanese wind chimes - all suitable for the summer season.

We invite you to view Masao Kozumi's glass works and enjoy the unique colors and forms using hand-blown and mold-blown classic techniques dated back to the Edo period.

What we call a Kansuibin is a lidded carafe; the body is a bottle-shaped jug with a versatile lid that can be used as a cup. In the planning process, I asked myself these questions – “How did the craftsmen see this imported carafe back in the day? What kind of resemblance did it have when it was mentioned in classic writing?” I was blowing the mold while becoming deeply indulged in this nostalgic mist of imagination. I would be happy to see this Kansuibin used today placed near your seat in a living room or by your pillow side as a perfect vessel to quench your thirst while relaxing. ― Masao Kozumi

    Sho Bok Si 瀟木子

We will be presenting an exhibition for Sho Bok Si at HIN in Kyoto and OVER THE COUNTER in Tokyo.

“Sajiya” is a project that started in 2018 by Atsushi Sakai. Sakai is a master wood craftsman who sponsors the gallery studio under his other artist name, “Sajiya” in Okayama Prefecture. With the meaning of “a person who works wood into fashion,” Sajiya’s concept goes beyond the perspective of making tools for functionality, and each detail of his woodwork is made to move the heart of the person who uses it. Thinned wood from the olive groves in Okayama is mainly used in his work, and each piece is modeled while he communicates with the different expressions and faces of every different type of wood.

This is Sho Bok Si's second exhibition at Arts & Science, and in addition to the one-of-a-kind items in large and small sizes, size 25 spoons and coffee spoons will be exhibited and available for sale.

Yaser Shaw — Trunk Show 2020

Pashmina stoles have arrived from 〈Yaser Shaw〉. Shaw’s production - spinning, weaving, and embroidering is all done by hand, staying true to the traditional techniques of the Kashmir region of India. A trunk show will be held at two A&S shops in Tokyo and Kyoto for three days from Friday, December 18th.

Pashmina is a very fine raw wool, which can easily be damaged by mechanical work. This is why carefully twisting and weaving by hand spinning and hand weaving techniques are essential. The natural texture of the raw wool lives on, creating a unique softness and feeling of falling in place when worn. Delicate embroidery work is the highlight of Shaw’s designs - a wide variety of patterns that are received well not only by women but also by men. By the skill works of craftsmen, fine patterns are beautifully decorated without applying tension to the fabrics.

At this trunk show about 200 different stoles will be available, including colorful new works and rare vintage items from his collections. We welcome you to please come and experience the rich colors and the finest touch of the fine embroidery in person.

    William Welstead Trunk Show 2020

Every December for the last 14 years I have been lucky enough to come to Tokyo to show my collection to friends and clients of Arts & Science. This year will be different, and while I am unable to travel I will still be sending a selection of my new work to Arts & Science for my annual trunk show.

In addition to the unusual diamonds and precious coloured stones that I normally work with I will be presenting a small collection of cabochon cut stones set in 22 carat gold. I am inspired by the ancient English and European royal jewels that were made before cutting techniques allowed faceted stones to be made. Cabochons were often a simply polished pebble from a river bed but when they are set in a jewel they can make a very powerful statement. These beautiful, sculptural stones show colour and lustre in very subtle way that I have always found very appealing.

I will miss coming to Japan more than I can say and hope very much to visit in 2021. My very best wishes to everyone who has been kind enough to come to my trunks shows over the years.

    TENTHOUSANDTHINGS Stone Collection

We will hold a jewelry custom order event by TENTHOUSANDTHINGS at & SHOP in Tokyo and Kyoto. This is a unique project in which designers Ron and David have traveled to India to work on a collection of original stones with the local craftsmen. At this event, we welcome you to choose your favorite stone with chains or leather straps to make your own one-of-a-kind combination. We will also introduce their new original 2020 collection.

    Original stones made in India
The two designers Ron Anderson and David Rees had always a strong connection with natural stones. Even when their concept of making jewelry was first born, it was their fascination of ancient stone beads that drove their passion. From the desire to make their original jewelry by applying a shaped cut to an unprocessed natural stone, they traveled to Jaipur, India. The process takes several months; to make the mold, bring it to a local workshop, and have the stones hand-cut to fit the mold by professional technicians. In these moments, they would sit down next to a skilled stone cutter for long periods of time to have the shapes formed exactly how they imagined. The stone is then polished through several steps. During this process, new ideas will come up, and some were born by developing changes in the molds on the spot.

“By actually going to the locations of the natural stones, we learned the real thrill of being able to developing these stones in the best ways - true to their characteristics,” said the two designers. Please take this opportunity to customize your favorite jewelry with each one-of-a-kind stone.

Perseverance has been a big word for us this year, to keep going along our path, making things and trying to put more beautiful, special things out into the world. Looking back over the year i think a pause in our routines- even though enforced by the pandemic- has been a good thing, allowing us to proceed more carefully and thoughtfully. Always look for the silver lining.” — Ron Anderson, David Rees

    Le Yucca’s | Semi-Custom Order

For the first time in two years, we will hold a semi-custom order event for <Le Yucca’s> at SHOES and THINGS.

Le Yucca's shoes are designed in mind with a thorough understanding of the structure of the foot. The attractive characteristics of the shoes lies not only in the beautiful form, but also in the surprising comfort and the ease of wear.
