- Bobby Mills “Within Two Trees: English Walnut & English Brown Oak, 2022-23”
The wood furniture of Bobby Mills has been featured at Arts & Science since 2021. In our second exhibition of Mill's work at Arts & Science Daikanyama, we will present a collection of seventeen new pieces that includes dining tables, benches, and stools.
With the new pieces, Mills explores of the possibilities of combining the colors and tones of different woods. The seat or top of each piece is made from dark-toned English brown oak or walnut oak and the base from a lighter-toned English oak. Mills incorporated rare woods into the collection – some up to nine-hundred years old – and constructed the pieces to showcase the grain structures and unique features of each wood.
Larger pieces were designed for the smaller living spaces that are typical in Japan. For example, the legs of the dining table are angled inward to minimize the footprint of the base.
Mills will be present for the exhibition, which offers a rare opportunity to hear the master craftsman's thoughts about his work and unique wood sources. Please join us for this enlightening experience.
“This will be my first time in Japan, so this is a very special trip for me. It has always been important to me to build deep and meaningful relationships with my partners and customers, many of whom are now friends. Trees have brought people together for thousands of years. We have built our homes with them, gathered beneath them, found guidance in them, and, for me, they continue to connect me with people in these enduring ways. I see the pieces I create as a part of my being. They carry my artistic voice and come from my soul. To meet those who invest in these pieces, who connect and find resonance with the objects I share in Japan will be wonderful.”

- Kenichi Seki “Spring starts with yellow”
An exhibition for wood lacquer artist Kenichi Seki will be held at HIN / Arts & Science, Nijodori Kyoto.
Seki who is inspired about Japan and Korean antiques does shape his work in the same bold and simple way, however there is always a new charmful characteristic added owned to Kenichi Seki. In Wajima, the way to make wood lacquered items are done divided by each task. It is rare to see an artist like Seki who performs the all steps from process of wood to lacquering on his own. His personality is reflected in every corner of his work, including the shape, carving, and lacquering. He has mastered the Japanese technique of wood carving called “kurimono” where he carves out from a single block of wood to create a shape. In this way the characteristics of the wood in former form translates to the carved work he makes fluently.
At this exhibition, we will present for the first time a work with a urushi lacquer in a color called 〈Kikuchi (red with yellow tones) 〉 which celebrates the long-awaited colors of spring. We will also present his other new styles of work and basic collection of wood pieces. We invite you to please see the wooden pieces in person. We feel this is a perfect stop to take while taking a refreshing springtime walk.
“When the yellow flowers are in full bloom, you can feel the warm arrival of spring.
After the long winter in Hokuriku, the scenery is like a symbol of long-awaited colors.
Red and black are the standard colors of lacquer, but there are variations within these color fields, particularly red. I would love for you to take a look.

- Perfumer H for ARTS&SCIENCE: WOOD LAND
The launch of our long-awaited new perfume will begin on Friday, April 7, 2023.
The fragrance WOOD LAND was created in response to the experience of living in Tokyo, where Sonya Park, Founder of Arts & Science, craves trees and the natural landscape. She wondered, "What would an oasis of woodland smell like in central Tokyo?" And Lyn Harris immediately had a vision for a cleansing fragrance: Woodland, a healing, green escape from the homogeneity of the concrete cityscape. We hope you experience this sense of escape when you wear it on your skin.
WOOD LAND fragrance: With wood notes, the scent opens with bitter orange and gradually develops notes of eucalyptus, black pepper, and moist moss. As if walking through the cool fog of the forest, the finish slowly envelops the wearer in the sensory experience of juniper, cedar, sandalwood, and frankincense.
If you enjoy layering scents, this fragrance is in the same wood family as INK, RAIN WOOD, and INDIAN WOOD.
Fragrance concentration: 20%
*Handblown glass bottles by glass artist Michael Ruh are also available. The bottles are amber in color and made especially for Arts & Science’s WOOD LAND fragrance. Click here for details- ITEM

- Cosi Tabellini “Order Event”
From Friday, March 17th, at WHITE BOX, we will hold an order event for Cosi Tabellini, an Italian homeware brand that proposes product designs that relate to a modern lifestyle.
Pewter is a metal that is rather simple to process due to its low boiling point, and because of its aesthetic beauty, the material has long been used suitable for tableware and other daily homewares. From the 14th century to the 17th century, England became the center of this industry, and in the latter half of the 19th century, during the Arts and Crafts movement and the Art Nouveau era, various items were released in pewter shaped by its distinct characteristics.
Cosi Tabellini uses this pewter material, rooted in its European culture, to propose products that relate to a modern lifestyle. Although the finish seems very product-like and has a sense of unity, each finish has a unique taste because the process always involves the skills of traditional Italian craftsmen.
At this order event, we have an array of works that are not usually introduced at Arts & Science, including tableware of plates, mugs, and cutlery, flower vases and candle holders. There is no other place in Japan showing these different styles from Cosi Tabellini. We invite you to please find this rare occasion to come and visit the shop to make your personal order.- TITLE

The 〈Cane〉, is a new developed item from Ryuji Mitani, is available in various sizes in two materials. The 〈Espresso Set〉 is a special set of items which includes an espresso cups and small plates in a wooden box.
At this timing of our event, specially blended coffee beans from a shop in Kyoto will also be available on sale, and you may enjoy small sweets and coffee at the store using the actual artist's tableware. (Refreshment quantities will be limited.) We are looking forward to your visit.
“I have continued to develop items that are necessary in a lifestyle setting.
Vessels continue to be the main part of my work. However, this time I have newly made a style of canes and a set for an espresso lover.
A set of small cups and small plates are made for six, in a wooden box.
The cane is an item that will be necessary for some within old age.
I have look around for the perfect cane, but I have not yet met one that I appreciated.
I have had increasing requests for a style of cane to be developed, and I finally decided to make one of my own.
The cane should be delicate and narrow, light weight, but strong enough to support your bodyweight.
To meet these needs, I made the surface a triangular shape.
The material is walnut and Sakura wood, both finished in urushi to be weather-proof.
The Espresso set is nice to have when greeting guests.
The set can also be used to enjoy distilled spirits and teas.
This exhibition is like expresso, tightly packed in a mere three days.
A coffee stand will be held on the 2nd floor, please feel free to casually drop by.”

Our annual trunk show for William Welstead has arrived once again for this holiday season. New arrivals will travel to three locations, Arts & Science Aoyama and A&S Fukuoka and A&S Kyoto. This is our premiere trunk show at A&S Fukuoka. We very much look forward to your visit.
“I am incredibly excited to be returning to Arts & Science and Japan after an enforced absence. During the last three years while travelling has been difficult, I have had to be more resourceful in acquiring jewels. Some things that used to be readily available are increasingly difficult to find now. This has made me focus on what I really want to use in my jewellery. Luckily, I have been working with many of my gem dealers for twenty or more years and continue to find beautiful stones.
In this diverse collection you will see coloured diamonds including a light brown marquise cut diamond in a 22 carat gold ring, a beautiful brown diamond pear shape and a group of spectacular natural-coloured diamonds in an eternity ring. I have also made a group of geometrical baguette and carre cut diamonds as pendants and a ring. Coloured stones include spinels, pink tourmalines, yellow sapphires, tsavorite garnets and rubies
I have been working with the lost wax process to create rings cast in 22 carat gold and platinum in simple organic shapes inspired by signet rings. In this collection you will see examples set with a ruby, a pink tourmaline cabochon and diamonds. I like this method which does not involve any solder joins and is effectively a continuous piece of gold with no beginning or end.
My love of antique diamonds continues unabated. I have been working with dealers all over the world to acquire the most interesting pieces. Here you will find examples of rose cut diamonds and old cut diamonds. I especially like the antique rose cut diamonds set in 22 carat gold earrings that have the asymmetrical look of stones cut by hand and eye only. Double rose cut diamonds are domed on both sides and there is a pendant set with one of these.
It will be a great pleasure for me to see old friends and clients at Arts and Science again.”

- Hodaka Higashi “Bloom Fragrance”
Hodaka Higashi is a glass sculptor based in Akita City. A&S Aoyama will hold an exhibition event for his new works at A&S Aoyama starting Friday, December 9th.
“Bloom Fragrance,” is the name of his new series of works which include perfume bottles and flower vases made of hand-blown glass. This is the artist's first exhibition at Arts & Science. We welcome you to please come and see this special presentation of glass works in person.
“It was June of this year, in Kyoto, on a day I felt like I was going to boil in the heat wave of the early summer, when I had a meeting with Sonya about an exhibition for Arts & Science. At that time the theme was very broad, and persisted of an idea to make organic shapes of glass work in the theme of fragrance and flowers. When I plan solo exhibitions, I often decide on a concept at the beginning and compose new works based on the idea. This time, my usual clear glass style has evolved to include colorful organic forms that create a beautiful contrast with the transparent glass. It was my first time to create a work that dealt with colors this strong, and above all, to develop this graceful shape I had to manually shape hot molten glass which was not an easy process. The more you put your hands in the glass to shape it, the more it loses its flexibility, but contractively you cannot shape it without putting your hands into it.
I believe there is always a challenge in creating something new and different, however the value always lies in the complicated process in order to make it happen.”

- ZANINI × ARTS & SCIENCE Collaboration Collection
Marco Zanini started his eponymous brand ZANINI in 2019 after working as creative director at Halston, Rochas, and Schiaparelli. Beginning with the first collection, Arts & Science has handled the brand in Japan on an exclusive basis, and we are pleased to announce and present our first collaborative collection developed with ZANINI at A&S Aoyama, starting Friday, November 18, 2022.
This season Marco Zanini has taken time off from his own collection to follow his long-standing interest in A&S clothing development, particularly the deep and evolving relationship to specialized Japanese fabrics and sartorial traditions. The new capsule collection ZANINI × ARTS & SCIENCE fuses the visions of both brands while providing a new path of exploration for Zanini, whose own line is rooted exclusively in Italian production and textiles. Made entirely in Japan, the capsule collection explores the possibilities of collaboration from three different angles:
・A&S styles made with ZANINI fabrics
・ZANINI styles made with A&S fabrics
・Items made from ZANINI styles and patterns
For the launch of this collection, we welcome Marco Zanini to Japan. This long-awaited opportunity to meet his customers at A&S was delayed due to travel restrictions in place since the launch of ZANINI in 2019. We are, therefore, especially pleased to invite you to A&S Aoyama to meet this exceptional designer in person on Friday evening, November 18th.

- A&S 2022AW “Bradford System Series”
The fabric count, structure, expression, feel, texture, taste, is all incorporated in the meaning of our production. The fabric development of Arts & Science original fabrics is the core of A&S craftsmanship, taking many aspects and shaping them according to the seasonal image. There is always a reason and background behind the creation of each fabric, featuring the specialties of each production partner, craftsman, and area of development. In this feature, we will focus on monthly fabric expressions from the 2022AW collection and introduce key pieces from these collections.
This time, we will focus on "thread making" using the Bradford system from the UK. We share here the story from the preliminary stage of fabric production – the thread, and the characteristics of this thread born through this spinning machine. The fabric count, structure, expression, feel, texture, taste, is all incorporated in the meaning of our production. - “Kumihimo” Combi Braid Belt
At Arts & Science, we always incorporate traditional Japanese craftsmanship into our development. This is a part of our efforts to create valuable products and to save the quality handmade skills and spirit of Japanese craftsmen that are slowly becoming lost in modern day production. Until now, we have mainly used the traditional techniques as part of an expression for smaller items such as Shinafu, a traditional cloth fabric, bamboo baskets using madake bamboo, deerskin with inden lacquer, and Jomon knitting. In this feature, we will introduce our efforts with “Kumihimo.”

- Hakimono Sekizuka Exhibition & Order Event
<Hakimono Sekizuka> creates aesthetically pleasing and easy-to-wear footwear with reliable Japanese craftmanship. The brand’s concept is, “A Japanese alternative to shoes.” Sekizuka proposes footwear for every day targeted for all demographics, in any time place and occasion. Arts & Science Fukuoka will hold its first footwear-oriented exhibition and order event from October 8th to the 16th. At this special occasion you may choose your favorite style of Sekizukas combined with our proposal of selected Arts & Science original fabrics for the “hanao (thong)” part of the shoes.
Our original fabrics, what we perceive as the core of our Arts & Science collection, are developed to express the image of every season. In this order event, we will introduce a wide variety of hanao options, including 14 archive fabrics stocked by Arts & Science that were personally selected by the brand owner Sekizuka. The visible part of the thong is made of our fabrics, and the back where it touches your foot is made in suede to maintain durability. We also offer 6 types of soles, including materials such as “cordovan” and “rattan” in both offerings of men’s and women’s styles. We wish you to come and visit to see the options in person and custom make your very own Hakimono Sekizuka shoes.
