Ryuji Mitani “case”

From Saturday, January 11, to Sunday, January 19, 2025, CORNER in Kyoto will host "Case," an exhibition by woodworker Ryuji Mitani. The event will feature a collection of storage vessels inspired by the artist’s own wish for 'items he truly desires.'

MESSAGE

“I wanted something like a letter box where I could carefully store the letters I wish to keep forever. I imagined a lidded sweets box in which my favorite sweet bean rice cakes would be neatly arranged. I thought it would be nice to have a box to store the paper filters for my morning coffee. While I believe that containers should be versatile and able to serve many purposes, there is, on the other hand, something uniquely satisfying about storage vessels that are perfectly tailored to the items they hold—like a bespoke garment. I believe this is the true meaning of ‘dimensions’—a concept I’ve heard about since I was young. Cotton swabs, butter, my favorite ‘Koeda’ candy, business cards, and so on. I created a variety of cases, each designed with dimensions that perfectly match the items they hold and crafted to enhance their function.”
