Pre-order Event for ikken Furniture 2023

A pre-order furniture event for design studio and a furniture workshop, “ikken” will be held at A&S. This is the first pre-order event we will hold in three years. The event will take place from Thursday, October 5th at HIN in Kyoto and from Thursday, October 26th at A&S Daikanyama in Tokyo. You can view 20 different types of furniture and woodwork, including ikken’s new styles.

Event details

The exhibition will focus on the SECOND CHAIR, a piece that evolved from the FIRST CHAIR presented at the previous exhibition, as well as furniture such as Desk-MAME, which was made especially for A&S by ikken completed through repeated discussions together. A new proposal will also be offered where customers can choose A&S fabric or leather for the seat upholstery of the chairs.

This is a rare opportunity to see a large collection of ikken furniture in one location. We look forward to welcoming you here where you can view the combination of ideas from architects and furniture craftsmen who work together.

MESSAGE

Regarding this second pre-order event

“FIRST CHAIR” is the first small chair designed for a child was named by Sonya Park, owner of A&S, on the occasion of our first furniture pre-order event.

I made it with Kiyoo Yamanaka and Hitoshi Onishi in the hopes that a small chair would be treasured with the memories of childhood.

Three years later, we planned together our second furniture pre-order event.

I made “SECOND CHAIR” with Hitoshi Ohnishi, with the image of a chair that has grown up three years since the “FIRST CHAIR.”

However, the chair will only be needed for a short time as the child grows, so we have made it a little smaller, with a cut-out handle and legs, so you can use it even after the child outgrows the chair.

A desk and chair were also produced in response to a request from A&S. Small pieces of furniture born from the perspective of daily life scenes will also make an appearance, and we look forward to welcoming you to come and see ikken’s furniture. We have worked to accumulate little by little new pieces to share throughout these three years.

PROFILE

Based in Kyoto since 2014, ikken is a design and architecture company that specializes in furniture for houses and shops. The design office is led by architect Takato Yoshida, who collaborates with three furniture craftsmen – Kiyoo Yamanaka, Hitoshi Onishi and Kentaro Yamaguchi – to create all of the products. The design process focuses on the tactile qualities of materials, the insight that comes from working with the hands, and the interplay between thinking and making. Their design approach is palpable in the architectural structure and material presence to the furniture they make. Some of the pieces were conceived specially for ARTS&SCIENCE and grew out of our ongoing dialogue with ikken.
