Bobby Mills “Objects for Living”

An exhibition by woodworker Bobby Mills, based in North Devon, England, will be held at HIN Kyoto from Friday, June 5. Featuring new works inspired by his time in Japan, the exhibition brings together furniture and objects that draw on the traces of time etched into the wood and the character of the materials.

Event details

At the center of the exhibition are new works that grew out of the artist’s experience visiting the Kawai Kanjiro Memorial Museum during his stay in Kyoto. Including low tables and floor chairs, these pieces take inspiration from Japanese living spaces. Also on view for the first time at ARTS&SCIENCE is the artist’s ‘Charred’ series, distinguished by the deep black tones and rich textures created through the charring of wood, and featuring stools and other furniture works.

The exhibition also includes works introduced in previous exhibitions that draw on the traces of time etched into the wood over the years and the inherent character of the materials themselves. Offering an opportunity to encounter the breadth of the artist’s perspective and approach to form, we invite you to experience the many facets of his work.

MESSAGE

“This exhibition brings together a group of objects inspired by Mills’ visit to the studio of Kawai Kanjiro whilst visiting Kyoto in 2023.
The works explore beauty in the everyday, usefulness, spontaneity, and natural harmony in forms and surfaces that feel grown rather than designed, at once ancient and contemporary The works invite contemplation through their balance of utility, sculpture, and material presence.
As in the forests from which these trees grow and the meditative craftsmanship of Kanjiro’s home, these pieces are quiet yet deeply alive.”
