Beginning Friday, March 6, we will once again host a trunk show featuring mariko tsuchiyama at ARTS&SCIENCE Marunouchi. At this exhibition, a selection of jewelry will be introduced, starting with her new collection, alongside rings, necklaces, earrings, and other pieces.

mariko tsuchiyama is based in the seaside town of Brighton, England. Using pearls cultivated in Japan, together with fine pearls responsibly sourced from around the world, each piece is carefully crafted in response to the character of the material.

The softly distorted texture of metal is set against pearls that glow gently as they catch the light. The forms, created to draw out the inherent expression of the materials themselves, are sculptural while retaining the warmth of handwork.

For this trunk show, jewelry inspired by landscapes encountered in the designer’s travels and by fragments of everyday memory is presented. We invite you to explore the collection.

“With the trunk show at ARTS&SCIENCE Marunouchi approaching, set within the beautiful passageway of Tokyo Station, I feel a growing sense of anticipation. I hope this message finds you well.

The latest collection, A Thousand Waves, was created from the scents and emotions I experienced during my travels last year. The many encounters along that brief journey gradually came together and now find expression in this collection. I hope that, on this occasion, you will enjoy discovering the jewelry for yourself.

As the first signs of spring begin to appear, I look forward to presenting the new collection to ARTS&SCIENCE customers ahead of its wider release.

Last year, it had been some time since travel felt closely connected to my passion. Through a series of unexpected opportunities, however, I found myself journeying often, and it was Okinawa that left the deepest impression. The movement of the clouds, the white, sun-bleached sand, the southern wind carrying a trace of moisture. Within these scenes, I sensed the contours of time flowing ceaselessly onward. I was drawn to its fleeting beauty, while also feeling the enduring presence of the sky and sea — and of our own bodies and souls — which remain constant even as time shifts and passes. That sensation has stayed with me, long after leaving Okinawa. As my young son gradually grew more independent, I began traveling alone again. Carrying both the exhilaration and the uncertainty of walking through unfamiliar places, I moved through new landscapes with a renewed perspective, allowing the memories and emotions stirred by what I encountered to take shape in material form.

The “Seoul Bougainvillea Pendant,” featuring a pink diamond, was created while imagining the vibrant energy and delicate beauty of flowers blooming in the alleys of Seoul. The “Memories of the Current Pendant” pairs a stone-like Tahitian keshi pearl with the long passage of time—like pebbles slowly shaped over years at the deep bed of the Seine as it flows through Paris. The “Tokyo Sonatine Ring” reflects the innocence and refinement found in the quiet morning landscape of Tokyo, as well as the sensibility evoked through the film Sonatine, expressed with an unadorned Akoya pearl and a seamless, continuous curve of gold.

During the creative period, I repeatedly listened to Ryuichi Sakamoto’s TRAVESÍA (curated by Alejandro G. Iñárritu). Quietly surrendering myself to music that carries transience, journey, and the forward movement of time, I revisited the experience of travel within me and gave it physical form. This collection was created through that approach. It was born from fragments of vivid, living light remembered within me—pieces of memory that cannot be contained in a single work.”

PROFILE

Born in Nagasaki Prefecture, Mariko Tsuchiyama moved to Tokyo after graduating from university. While working there, her desire to engage in more creative production grew stronger, leading her to relocate to the UK. She studied the fundamentals of jewellery at a design school in London, and after living in Hong Kong and Paris, established her own brand in 2016. With the theme “A Reflection At Sea,” she develops collections with an awareness of stories from the natural world. Each piece is created to suit the individual form of the pearl, resulting in designs of which no two are alike. Her jewellery attracts people from a wide range of backgrounds, regardless of age, gender, or nationality. A&S began carrying the collection from the 2017 Spring/Summer season.
