Living a life centered on his family and in close connection with nature, Kunugi describes himself as a “woven product craftsman,” crafting works through the weaving and braiding of natural materials, with a focus on plants. When he moved with his family from the city to a forest in Nagano Prefecture, he became a woodcutter, motivated by the need for firewood. Today, he creates his works by personally gathering nearly all the materials he uses. His pieces, deeply influenced by his way of life, exude a charm that is truly unique.
In this first exhibition of Kunugi’s works at ARTS&SCIENCE, a wide variety of items will be on display, including baskets, containers, and vases of different shapes and sizes. The title of the exhibition, “Bansho,” means “various forms, everything.” We hope many people will enjoy exploring his bold and dynamic creations. We look forward to welcoming you.

PROFILE
Masamitsu Kunugi, a woven product craftsman born in 1986, has roots in both Korea and Japan. He graduated from Bunka Fashion College’s Apparel Technology Department in 2008 and studied restoration at a Scandinavian furniture shop in Tokyo. In 2011, he pursued studies in Denmark, where he delved into environmental issues and peace at a school with a multicultural student body. During his travels in New Zealand, he fortuitously encountered the teachings of Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, which inspired him greatly. In 2019, he moved to Nagano, where he now weaves baskets and contemplates the universe.
