Washable Silk

For the Spring/Summer season, ARTS&SCIENCE offers washable pieces made from cotton, linen, and certain silk fabrics. Here, we present washable silk items from the 2024 SS collection.

A&S garments are designed with the philosophy that everyday wear should be easy to care for at home. To maintain the natural texture and appearance of fibers, most items are made to be washable, except for wool and other animal fibers. The fabrics are relaxed during production to relieve stress and prevent distortion. Afterward, a product wash is applied to finalize the look, ensuring that the garments do not shrink, pucker*, or lose shape even when washed.

Silk Cotton Taffeta

A silk and cotton blend fabric featuring pre-dyed taffeta* made from the finest raw silk by BRATAC. This fabric combines the unique firmness and elegant luster of raw silk with cotton for spring and summer wear. The Hem Dart Easy Pants and Draw String Gather Skirt are hand washable, while the Bal Collar Coat and Peaked Lapel Jacket are recommended for dry cleaning only to prevent shape loss from water washing.

When washing A&S silk products with hand wash instructions at home, use a mild detergent and gently wash the items separately in water without rubbing. After lightly removing excess water, spin briefly in the washing machine and lay flat to dry in the shade to prevent any distortion or stretching. Enjoy the lively texture and natural changes of the fibers while maintaining your garments to your preference.

  • Puckering refers to stitch shrinkage caused by various factors during sewing and the seam wrinkles that occur after washing due to changes in fabric dimensions. Some product designs intentionally incorporate this characteristic as a feature, but unexpected shrinkage differences may lead to distortion.
  • Taffeta is a type of high-density plain weave silk fabric known for its smooth texture and shiny surface.
  • Dobby refers to a device used to control the complex lifting of warp threads needed for weaving intricate patterns or structures. A loom equipped with this device is called a dobby loom, and the fabrics woven with this loom are referred to as dobby weaves or dobby fabrics.
  • Bōsen-dai shigoki is a technique where a pattern is first hand-printed using resist paste (bōsen) and then dyed using shigoki-zome. This process ensures that only the areas with the resist paste remain undyed, preserving the pattern. Hand printing involves placing a stencil on fabric stretched over a printing table and applying a dye paste mixture onto the fabric with a spatula. After steaming to set the colors, the fabric is washed and finished.
  • In the context of this article, ‘washable’ means that A&S products are intended to be hand-washed as per their care instructions. It does not indicate that a washable treatment has been used to make water-sensitive materials less likely to shrink or wrinkle.
