1+0 for A&S – Stacking Mug & Saucer

Ceramic artist Kan Ito is involved as producer at 1+0 (Ichi Tas Zero), a brand that develops products crafted by the hands of potters. Drawing inspiration from the skilled work of anonymous potters in everyday ceramics produced during the Edo period, the brand offers pieces that fit naturally into modern life.

At ARTS & SCIENCE, we have previously collaborated with 1+0 to create the curry plates used at DOWN THE STAIRS and 2ND FLOOR. With rims turned inward and a shape that allows even a single grain of rice to be scooped easily, these plates are well suited to everyday use.

This release introduces a mug and saucer designed to be used alongside the curry plate, made exclusively in collaboration with 1+0 for A&S. The design is based on the mug and saucer Kan Ito himself created for use at DOWN THE STAIRS. A new mould was developed, maintaining a size that fits naturally in the hand and a clean, simple form, while allowing the pieces to stack neatly. Two glazes are available: the same “Honey Ash Glaze” as the curry plate, and “Ivory Glaze,” with a gentle tone. From mealtimes to everyday moments, these are pieces you can naturally reach for. A product line launched in 2012 by ceramicist Kan Ito in his role as a designer, it draws inspiration from the robust pottery created by anonymous Edo-period craftsmen, who lived a life combining farming and pottery making and created each piece with focused attention. Today, it produces items that support a healthy and aesthetically pleasing lifestyle, crafted with advanced techniques. For example, the oval plate gains added elegance from a raised foot on its underside, and its milky-white porcelain makes dishes stand out beautifully.
