A&S 2025SS – SHIMAZOME(島染)

This season, we are pleased to introduce Shimazome, a new original fabric from A&S. It is hand-dyed using an adaptation of traditional dyeing techniques from Amami Ōshima, known for its dorozome (mud dyeing), and was born from our pursuit of new and distinctive colors. The name, meaning “island dyeing,” expresses our hope that, like Shimauta—the folk songs passed down through the islands of the Nansei archipelago—this dyeing method will be cherished and passed on for generations to come.

Shimazome is rooted in Amami’s traditional mud dyeing technique, which relies on a chemical reaction between the dye extracted from the Teichigi tree (Sharinbai of the rose family) and the iron content of the mud fields. Approximately 600 kg of Teichigi wood is chipped, boiled for two days, and then steeped for four to five days. The resulting dye, rich in tannic acid, is used to color the fabric, which is then neutralized with lime alkali to continue the dyeing process, with this cycle repeated around ten times. After the fabric is dried, it is dyed with natural mud from the iron-rich mud fields, allowing the dye to bond with the fibers. The fabric undergoes several rounds of dyeing and washing, with careful adjustments made to achieve the desired color depth. This entire process, done entirely by hand, is incredibly time-consuming and requires tremendous effort.

High count fine linen SHIMAZOME

At A&S, we have crafted classic three-button jackets, long shirts, and pants with a relaxed fit, all using Shimazome, a dyeing technique based on traditional mud dyeing. The High count fine linen SHIMAZOME, made from 100% linen, is a high-density, fine-count linen fabric that has been crafted with the Shimazome dyeing process using single-ply yarn.

Cotton linen sunshine stripe SHIMAZOME

This fabric, woven with medium-weight cotton slub two-ply yarn for the warp and medium-weight linen single-ply yarn for the weft, is used to craft a women’s short jacket and easy pants. The warp incorporates bleached yarn, red clay-dyed yarn, and Ryukyu indigo-dyed yarn, all of which evoke the sunlight that falls upon the island and sea. This inspired the name Cotton linen sunshine stripe SHIMAZOME. While appearing plain from a distance, the fabric reveals deep, intricate hues from the Amami dyeing process upon closer inspection.
