LITMUS is a workshop specializing in aizome*. It was established by Yuuji Matsui and Kazuo Yoshikawa in 2000. LITMUS practices a traditional dyeing method called “aku** hakkodate” which uses a dye called “sukumo”: a combination of dried polygonum leaves, coal lye, Japanese sake and wheat bran which are added to accelerate its fermentation process. This environmentally friendly method limits itself to using only the natural materials. Staying true to this traditional method, Matsui and Yoshikawa continue to pursue the color of Japanese ai through various materials and expressions.

* aizome = Japanese indigo dyeing ** aku = lye

During the event, A&S garments and accessories such as blouse, dress, coat, pouch, handkerchief and stole will be available in various hues of ai. Bag, cushion cover, T-shirt and many more LITMUS items will also be available for sale during the event.

Each dyeing process is done by bare hands to grasp the right sensation. The colored hands and fingernails of the artisans embody their rich experience and persistence.

To create 24 shades of ai which hangs from the ceiling of the venue, LITMUS commissioned the washi artist Chiaki Mori. This installation featuring hand-made Japanese paper is their collaborative work. As the ornament turn, they swing gently to captivate the visitors with its softness.
(※ Installation limited to AT THE CORNER in Tokyo)

The event will continue until Sunday August 26th. We look forward to your visit.
