High count fine linen is made with a high-density weave of ultra-fine count fine linen yarn, This fabric is one of Arts & Science’s standard original fabrics that has repeatedly been updated since the beginning of the first collection.

  • High Count Fine Linen DORO – 100% linen

This season, we have applied traditional Amami-Oshima mud dyeing and indigo mud dyeing to our standard fabric. Amami Oshima’s mud dyeing is a technique that has supported Tsumugi in Oshima, a traditional dyeing and weaving region. The technique has a long history and took root as a culture about 1,300 years ago. The fabric is dyed with dyestuffs extracted from the evergreen shrub of the rose family, Sharinbai, and then rubbed in the mud fields, which are natural dyeing grounds, to create a chemical reaction between the iron contained in the soil and the tannin in the sharinbai, resulting in a brownish-brown color.

Indigo mud-dyeing is a dyeing technique unique to Amami Oshima, combining mud dyeing with natural Indian indigo extracted from leguminous plants. The first step is to dye the fabric with indigo, followed by mud dyeing, and then the colors are layered on top of each other. After a long period of time and handwork, the deep and beautiful black and blue shades of blue are produced by this combination of natural Indian indigo with mud dye. In addition, the natural ingredients contained in each dye have insect repelling and deodorizing effects.

Mud dyeing at Amami Oshima was born not only as an industry, but also from the blessings of nature and the wisdom of their ancestors. Arts & Science is hopes to preserve this mud dyeing culture that can only be done on Amami Oshima. This season, this is one of our key colors that we choose for every month, “Muddy Brown.” The fabric is expressed in these different shades of mud-dyeing. We welcome you to come and see the fabric in person at the shops.
