A&S 2023SS “Hand Drawing Check Silk Habutae”
The fabric count, structure, expression, feel, texture, taste, is all incorporated in the meaning of our original production. The fabric development of Arts & Science original fabrics is the core of our A&S craftsmanship, considering the many possibilities and shaping them into our distinct seasonal image. There is always a reason and background behind the creation of each fabric, featuring the specialties of each production partner, craftsman, and area of development. In this feature, we will focus on the fabric expression of the 2022 Spring Summer collection and the styles that use this fabric.
We would like to introduce our silk fabric that uses modern dyeing techniques to reproduce the checkered motif of batik dying.

Expressions created by industrial dyeing inspired by batik patterns
This fabric pattern is inspired by a hand-painted flat-brush lattice pattern that has been dyed using one of the ancient folk dyeing techniques known as batik dyeing. Batik dyeing is a technique in which melted wax is applied to cloth with a brush, etc., and patterns are drawn and dyed according to the waxed patterns. We wondered, it possible to express this manual dyeing technique process by machine, using modern technology? This development of the “Hand Drawing Check Silk Habutae,” was created with this precise question and challenge in mind.
This season’s fabric is available in two colorways, “Gobaishi (gallnut)” and “Kakishibu (permission juice)” both of which are natural dyes, where the patterns are expressed in different forms. “Gobaishi Nassen (gallnut print)” is made by controlling the density of the dyed process, finished in different shades of one color, natural bluish purple. “Kakishibu Nassen (permission juice print)” uses a batik style using wax to exclude areas of color, in two shades of brown.
The compatibility between natural dyes and how we wanted to express the outcome was considered thoroughly and we choose methods that created the best use and display of characteristics in soft silk habutae fabric. Be sure to visit the shops this season to see in person these styles and fabrics made in this unique combination of colors, patterns, and textures.
