Yumi Nakamura “Utilitarian”

HIN Aoyama is pleased to host an exhibition by metalworker Yumi Nakamura, whose vessels suggest a variety of uses. The exhibition features a selection of her functional pieces.

Event details

Titled “Utilitarian” at the suggestion of ARTS & SCIENCE, this exhibition brings together Yumi Nakamura’s works—from iconic kettles and teapots to pieces of varied forms and functions created throughout her career. Many of the objects have a sculptural beauty, yet remain fully functional. New creations featuring openwork carving will also be on display.

We also plan to hold this exhibition, “Utilitarian,” at HIN Kyoto, which is scheduled to reopen next spring.

  • From Saturday, December 13 to Sunday, December 14 until 3:00 p.m., entry will be by reservation only.
  • Reservations will be determined by lottery. If you wish to apply, please review the notes and submit your application via the reservation form below during the application period.

MESSAGE

Utilitarian

“Beautiful objects that serve a purpose. They are both tools and works of art.

I have always been drawn to the timeless qualities of tools humans have used over time—the strength of materials, the beauty that develops with age, and the human sense of humor they embody. I have absorbed these qualities in my own way, transforming them into the forms I create today. Objects that are both functional and sculpturally beautiful—this has been my goal since I began making art.

The owner of ARTS & SCIENCE, Sonya Park, named this collection “Utilitarian.” Literally, it translates to “utilitarianism,” referring to things that tend to produce pleasure, good, or happiness—or, conversely, prevent pain, harm, or unhappiness. Her interpretation felt surprisingly fitting.

These are objects that enrich a space simply by being present. Through daily use, they develop a personal beauty unique to each individual. This exhibition gathers such works. Please enjoy.”
