I am lucky enough to live in a country garden. Every moment of the day I see flowers. For me, painting flowers is my recreation time. I have been painting flowers for 50 years, only with Japanese brushes. I started hand-painting on shirts for a summer collection. When Sonya (A&S Founder and Director Sonya Park) saw them, she told me: “Diane, you can’t paint many shirts by hand, I would like to print your paintings, exclusively for ARTS&SCIENCE.” I enthusiastically agreed, so it all started.

The medium on which the painting is created is a very fine, hand-woven Indian cotton canvas. I specifically choose this medium because it absorbs the colours in an unexpected way, depending on the amount of water and the density of the paint: this allows me to work in the same way as watercolour painting. The result surprises and attracts me: a stain becomes a rose petal. Chance fascinates me. My Japanese brushes are essential to achieve what I want.

I started without a program. I get inspired by the flowers and leaves I have in the garden and I let myself invent many more. The colours come on their own, they are my air. I live and think in colours. Colours are very important to me and I work with them according to my spirit of the moment. Colours are my first means of expression and they have always guided me.
