The Artist

Faye Toogood is a British designer. After working as decoration editor at “THE WORLD OF INTERIORS” magazine for 8 years, Toogood established “STUDIO TOOGOOD” in 2008, which specialized in interior design and production of spaces. In 2010, she presented her first furniture collection titled “Assemblage 1” under her name “Faye Toogood”. With an academic training in art, Toogood has earned various prizes and honors due to her extraordinary and sharp regard towards product design. From installation for major brands to production of spaces, Toogood’s domain of activity is vast.

Toogood also presented a collection of unisex apparel items under the brand name “toogood” with her sister, Erica Toogood. The brand has been part of A&S’s collection since 2014AW season.

The Work

Whether they are made of fibreglass, lava or distorted wood, Faye Toogood’s creative products, which originate from her theme and concept, are vast. Each studio member has a high mindset towards materials and is always keen to try extraordinary things: even if it is necessary to take a step out of the norm. The result can be seen in the freedom of their expression which surpasses the stereotype.

Toogood’s works are biographical, for they are highly influenced by the creator’s state of mind, the situation and the environment surrounding herself. They are remarkable for their sculptural aspect which gives the aura of an art piece.

Inspiration of “Roly-Poly”

The exhibition’s main feature, the Roly-Poly chair is a new series created for the 4th furniture collection, “Assemblage 4”. Each piece is handmade by small-scale manufacturers and skilled artisans working with traditional British craftsmanship using fibreglass and plaster.

Contrary to the previous collection which featured hard and sharp industrial elements, Roly-Poly series features rounded edges, shimmering materials and a plumpness inspired from the innocence of childhood toys to create a soft and playful form. Toogood points out that events such as the birth of her first daughter triggered a drastic change in her mind and environment.
