In this feature for our A&S SS20 collection, we continue to focus on our natural dyeing process, sharing our commitment to details. In the large realm of “natural dyeing,” there are numerous different methods and characteristics. In this last edition we will elaborate on our dyeing method using natural pigments.

Natural Pigment Dyeing

This is a method of dyeing using natural pigments from elements such as soil, clay and shell powder. These pigments have been familiar to people for a long time and it is said the origins date back to mural painting in caves drawn from ancient eras. The process is done by using fine powder that does not melt in water. This adhesion to the cloth first creates a very stiff, hard layer on the fabric which gradually wears soft in use and the color will fade away gradually. This season at A&S, we use this natural pigment on our original fabrics. Each item in our lineup is made to enjoy this ageing process.

Kurenai / Shu

An iron oxide element pigment made from soil. The different size and shapes of the pigment crystals effect the expression of the hues.
