A&S 2022AW “Wool Washi Cotton Tweed”
The fabric count, structure, expression, feel, texture, taste, is all incorporated in the meaning of our production. The fabric development of Arts & Science original fabrics is the core of A&S craftsmanship, taking many aspects and shaping them according to the seasonal image. There is always a reason and background behind the creation of each fabric, featuring the specialties of each production partner, craftsman, and area of development. In this project, we will focus on monthly fabric expressions from the 2022AW collection and introduce key pieces from these collections.
This month, we focus on our “Wool Washi Cotton Tweed,” a blend of three fabrics including wool, Washi (Japanese paper) and cotton. We will go into detail and introduce the characteristics and texture behind this originally developed A&S fabric.

This month, we focus on our “Wool Washi Cotton Tweed,” a blend of three fabrics including wool, Washi (Japanese paper) and cotton. We will go into detail and introduce the characteristics and texture behind this originally developed A&S fabric.
We have selected Mino Washi paper, which is historically manufactured in Mino City, Gifu Prefecture to mix in this fabric. Mino Washi is one of three main producers of washi paper in Japan including Echizen Washi from Fukui and Tosa Washi from Kochi prefecture. This Mino Washi paper is cut into 4mm pieces, twisted, and then homespun into yarn with extra-large neps (entangled and knotted features) created by intertwining the washi fibers and cotton yarn. The base and the upper threads are alternatively switched using these mixed materials.
As a result, a beautiful rich expression of Japanese tweed is accomplished, made with a Japanese special spinning technology and traditional Japanese paper material.
