- Masao Kozumi “Danjyu”
A solo exhibition featuring glass artist Masao Kozumi will be held at OVER THE COUNTER in Tokyo from Friday, July 29th. We will introduce his new works including “Danjyu,” a traditional stacking box used for serving food, in glass. We will also showcase new works colored in "Kame-nozokiiro*,” a tone that belongs to the Japanese indigo color story. Kozumi’s classic transparent green pieces will also be available. The exhibition pieces will travel to Kyoto, HIN / Arts & Science, and A&S Fukuoka as well. We welcome you to come and visit the exhibition.
The object “Danjyu”
This story begins with a 17th-century Japanese Biidoro* glass fragment excavated from the site of a magistrate's office in Nagasaki. The fragment was originally part of the side of a green-tinged danjyu. People who lived an affluent life in the Edo period likely enjoyed summer delicacies in biidoro danjyu as a way to cool down during the hot and humid summer months.
This glass Danjyu, designed and produced by Masao Kozumi using the same mold-blown* technique of the era, expresses the Japanese people’s unchanged view of nature and the sentiment of coolness they still feel when they see glass that resembles the transparent elements of water and ice. The delicate and precise finish of the Danjyu, in which the lid and body are perfectly aligned, offers a glimpse of the artist’s high level of skill and years of experience.
* Kame-nozokiiro (Japanese word for a pale aqua indigo) : The color of a cloth seen through an indigo-colored glass bottle. Also known to be the color of the sky reflected in the water inside a bottle, representing a very pale blue color of indigo dye.
* Biidoro: The name of a mainstream type of glass in 17th-century Japan. Derived from Vido, which means glass in Portuguese.
* Mold blowing: A technique of blowing glass into a mold made of metal or clay.

- Yumi Nakamura “Objects to boil water”
HIN / Arts & Science is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by metalsmith Yumi Nakamura starting Friday, July 15. This is her first presentation at Arts & Science and features the kettle, the item that inspired her creative activities, as well as other pieces from Nakamura’s personal archive selection that have aged over time and through use.
A tea ceremony by “Tsuki no on (Sound of the Moon),” Notsuki Watanabe will also be held during the event. We welcome you to come and enjoy two precious Taiwanese native teas carefully hand-picked using tools produced by Nakamura. The loose tea leaves will also be available for purchase. We look forward to your visit.
【Reservation Updates】
The first two days of this event and tea ceremony are now fully booked as of June 11th. From the 17th forward reservations appointments will be prioritized but not mandatory. In case of overcrowding there may be entry restrictions, or we may ask customers without reservations to wait in line.
“Objects to boil water”
I believe that the act of boiling water is a primitive activity.
It also requires tools, but these go beyond simply being tools; they are symbols that represent the burning fire. They are objects to boil water in, something primitive, something simple, something that brings a sense of richness to life.
For this presentation, I imagined the relationship between the kettle and the furnace, and how the act of boiling water can be done in various places: on the table, in the studio, in the kitchen, in the tea ceremony room, or even outdoors.
I hope you enjoy the exhibition.
― Yumi Nakamura

- PROFILE
- Yumi Nakamura / Metalsmith. Born in Saitama in 1981 and majored in interior design at Musashino Art University. She lived for three years in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, where she encountered and drew inspiration from the diverse regional craftwork. She returned to Tokyo in 2008, where she first began exploring metalwork while also working at a design studio. In 2012, she moved to Nara and set up her workshop, devoting herself full-time to the craft of metalwork. The beautiful shapes that she forms by heating, beating, and hammering a single sheet of metal belie their function as simple tools. Her pieces become more attractive with use, and, over time, will show the influence of the user’s hand.

- r a s a i 2022 Summer Collection Pop-up
Based in India, asiam studio, which designs, dyes and sews fabrics and is renowned for their quality and consideration of the local people and the environment, presents ‘r a s a i ‘. Arts & Science is one of the few stores in the world that has presented ‘r a s a i ‘ from their first collection.
From July 1st, we will be launching the new collection at A&S Aoyama, Marunouchi, and Kyoto. As a preview, A&S Fukuoka, our newest brick-and-mortar shop, will be the first to hold a pop-up event from Friday, June 24th. During the event, the entire collection on offer from Arts & Science this season will be on display at the Fukuoka location.
Founded in India in 1996 by two partners, asiam studio is a company that handles the entire production process of creating soft furnishings and clothing, from design and dyeing to sewing, and has collaborated mainly with established European brands. From 2018, the founder-designer started the process of renewing and developing the ‘r a s a i ‘ label, which was the starting point of the company, and since 2021, the founder-designer has proceeded with plans to create a new company, asiam studio living, to focus on various activities such as creating limited edition products and developing concepts. asiam studio’s goals include producing items with a universal appeal that enrich the lives of users. The conscious use of the back side of the fabric as a reversible factor is always calculated in their design, and the possibilities of design are never bound by age, gender, or size.
For the 2022 Spring/Summer r a s a i collection, we will introduce new items from the main collection along with special items made specifically for Arts & Science and reflecting A&S’s requests. These items for A&S are the result of detailed adjustments in fabric selection, stitch positions, and dye tones. The colorful items include jackets and coats made of Woven Checks, a colorful checked fabric, and reversible jackets, blouses, and dresses made of Mulmul, a classic lightweight fabric.
Woven Checks
This fabric was one of the designer’s custom-woven projects that had been kept carefully aside until the right opportunity appeared to develop items for a limited-edition series. Currently, it is not easy to manufacture high-quality, hand-woven fabrics in a multicolor check due to the increasing demand for khadi, a traditional cloth of the region. The unique texture of hand weaving and the expression of r a s a i’s standard sewing machine stitching are characteristic of this product, which is finished entirely by hand sewing. To develop this limited-edition collection, Arts & Science has selected four types of fabrics and styles from r a s a i ’s sample collection.
Mulmul
The Indian bed quilt “Razai” is the origin of the brand name, ‘r a s a i.’ The cotton wadding is gently wrapped in a cotton fabric called Mulmul and hand-sewn. Mulmul has historically been woven by the most highly skilled weavers in India. Also called, “woven wind,” this is an ultra-thin, soft and translucent cotton fabric with excellent breathability. Nowadays, the technique is close to becoming lost as power looms have taken over the majority of production in India, and this special attention and skill are not required when sewing in the modern way. In this r a s a i collection, in addition to the standard double-layered pants and underdresses, special items made only for A&S were created through fine adjustments including customized stitch placements, patterns, color dye selection and color combinations.- TITLE

- TENTHOUSANDTHINGS Trunk Show 2022
Jewelry brand, TENTHOUSANDTHINGS has been chosen as one of 21 designers for Brilliant & Black: A jewelry Renaissance exhibition by Sotheby’s. The brand has also actively collaborated on presentations at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. We are honored to present new pieces from TENTHOUSANDTHINGS especially selected for Arts & Science at A&S Marunouchi, Aoyama and Fukuoka from Friday, May 20th until the end of August.
Arts & Science has presented various events in collaboration with TENTHOUSANDTHINGS by Ron Anderson and David Rees. At this trunk show, a number of unique jewelry shapes, including a customized variation of chandelier earring from the Sotheby's exhibition and rings using rare stones will be shared. The trunk show will tour 3 A&S stores with various pieces to fit the aesthetic of each location.
David Rees remarks the sources and inspirations of creating “beautiful things” at TENTHOUSANDTHINGS are the combinations of “raw materials” and “manufacturing techniques.” The philosophy is to express the beauty in jewelry without suppressing the natural features of the stones and metals - their original beauty. "With exciting and quality materials, we feel the value will not diminish, and we hope that translates to the end-user. Our jewelry adds “value” to the wearer. The designers share, “our creations are unique beautiful pieces always with a distinct statement, an originality, the concept being true to the material yet always unusual and special.”- TITLE

She wishes for many people to have access to her jewelry and the pieces to be worn in every day scenes. <Stardust constellation> is a selection of one-of-a-kind new pieces exclusively shown in Japan at Arts & Science. We invite you to see this array of new jewelry at this special occasion.
Stardust Constellation
“Ancient civilizations built their entire worlds around trying to understand the mysteries of the universe. For me, living in a city where I can only rarely see the stars, there is still an allure to finding where is my place, even if it is just calling to mind the idea of infinity every now and then. So, using materials from outer space (everything is from outer space!) and evoking the sparkle of the night sky, I’m searching too.”

- Peter Ivy “Positive Space”
An exhibition by glass artist Peter Ivy will be held at three Arts & Science locations in Tokyo, Kyoto and Fukuoka. “Positive Space” will be unveiled for the first time at this exhibition. We invite you to come and see Ivy’s new series of works, which represent a new and very distinct take on glassware compared to the artist’s existing style.
In preparation for our special presentation, Ivy said that he made many new and different attempts. “Positive Space” is one result of his great efforts and presents a series of vases born out of his intense research on material and repeated experimentation. Together with “Positive Space,” there will be a lineup of his traditional grey glassware. Please enjoy the contrast of colors. In addition, a new item Ojyu (a Japanese-style stackable bento box) will also be presented.
The beginning of Spring is the perfect time to introduce Peter Ivy’s colorful new work, and we look forward to welcoming you to enjoy this rare opportunity to view works that are not included in our usual selection at the shops.

Exhibiton “Sunny & Cloudy” by glass artist Kazumi Tsuji will be held at OVER THE COUNTER from January 21 (Fri) to January 30 (Sun). We introduce various styles of works from “ms.garden,” newly presented at her shop factory zoomer last year. Other series will also be available. We welcome you to come and see a full lineup of Tsuji’s expertise.
“ms. garden” was born from the artist's desire to create items which lift your heart and mood, while we go through the difficulties of the pandemic. She wanted to portray the closer organic relationship we have to nature now, spending more time at home. This series of glassware depicts plants and butterflies with cuts and enamel on the glass surface with a new milky white glass.
We wish you to please come and visit our first exhibition held in 2022. We look forward to seeing you there.
Sunny & Cloudy
“‘Life has its sunshine and its rain, its days and its nights its peaks and its valleys.’ - This are words from a Snoopy comic strip that I loved to ready in bed when I was little. The saying means, if you are alive, there will be the fun days and hard days. I mean, I've been told this kind of thing many times, and I know it, but in the pandemic I've kind of come back to this very common saying.
A sudden shift was how the pandemic affected me. I was always looking toward the outer world. At the beginning for a while, I was at a lost in it all, but in the second year I found various discoveries and enjoyments in my days of walking around my home, the workshop, and the fields and paths around my neighborhood. I realized that weeds will grow quickly when left alone, hydrangeas grow taller and taller day to day, and white butterflies that dance amongst the cabbage fields show me a familiar scene every same time of the year. These two years have completely reestablished how human society and I believe has created some change in some good ways. I wrote on the glass the very personal feelings I found and felt in my daily life, through the weather, the plants in the garden and the animals I meet. It was an unfamiliar form of my own production, and will be kept as good record for myself and the life we are living right now. If I know many people can empathize with my current creations, that is more happiness than I imagine for these results of my new series of works.
It will be sunny, partly cloudy and later on a little rainy today.”

- Fukuoka arrival: Pots from Steve Harrison
*Reservations are required for this event. Please see below on how to make your reservation.
New 2021 pots by Steve Harrison have arrived from England. These works will be introduced at Arts & Science Fukuoka from January 7th (Friday) to January 16th (Sunday), 2022. Harrison’s work, which has been introduced in Japan by Arts & Science with great care since its opening in 2003, will be available in the Fukuoka area to see in person for the very first time.
Steve Harrison's often uses the traditional method of pottery - Salt Glazing. As the salt is sprayed onto the pots while they are firing in the kiln, the chemical reaction between the salt and glaze creates organic patterns on the surfaces. The interesting part of this process is not knowing the final outcome of the pots until the kiln is opened. Steve Harrison has fascinated many people with this technique. While the pots are a classical western style, Steve Harrison’s original characteristics show strongly in this handmade process. Arts & Science has been working with Harrison for 18 years. We continue to receive his very best works several times a year in Japan, and we have always shared a special exhibition of his works every two years. Sometimes, like〈BIG IN JAPAN〉, creative director Sonya Park proposes a unique theme together with Harrison. Please also see our history of publishments we have produced and explore our history of working together. (Steve Harrison’s series of books are available on our A&S ONLINE SELLER)
The new arrival of pots at Fukuoka are mainly works Harrison has created in 2021. All of his pots are marked with the year of production, which represents his identity along with his other hallmark stamps. He has chosen himself his best work available including items such as cups, teapots, and bowls made in salt glaze of various colors and sizes. Although at times Harrison will make special items with a certain theme or concept for Japan, his basic concept is defined by pots that can be enjoyed in your daily lifestyle which do not always cause for a special occasion. We welcome you to take a look at this new collection of pots created especially for Arts & Science. We look forward to your visit.
Arts & Science collection
“Familiar forms, like teapots, lidded jars, jugs, bowls and cups stand to remind me of who I am as a potter. I often have adventures where I explore different artistic ideas however, I always return to these utilitarian pots. They remind me that ceremony and special occasions don’t need to be reserved for this kind of work. I feel that they imbue everyday living and enrich the moment. This is more poignant in pandemic times where we need to recognize and celebrate the ordinary because it is difficult to search out the extraordinary.
This small collection of work for A&S is a true reflection of this idea.
”

TENTHOUSANDTHINGS is a jewelry brand based in New York. Arts & Science have presented the brand’s jewelry for many seasons. This year as well, we will present the brand’s newest collection. The presentation will begin from December 10th (Friday) at A&S Marunouchi until the beginning of the new year.
This time, we are presenting works from the “Beads” collection, a classic series created since the early days of the brand, the “Fetched stone” collection that features hand-cut rough stones into a rounded form where you can feel the raw cut of the stones themselves, and the “Sculpture” collection that uses special sculptural techniques. We will also introduce a one-of-a-kind necklace named the “Waterfall,” which is decorated with rare stones inspired by the vision of water overflowing on rocks from a waterfall. In this presentation, you can enjoy the specific production techniques and the vision of TENTHOUSANDTHINGS in its entirety.
For both designers, Japan is the country they love more than anywhere else.

- TENTHOUSANDTHINGS was established in 1991 by Ron Anderson and David Rees, self-taught jewelers. TTT meticulously hand crafts modern heirlooms — sculptural forms in silver and gold — inspired by abstract shapes found in nature. Their concept underlies in the idea that jewelry should give a person “value” – a unique energy that comes from each specific piece and translates to the wearer. Arts & Science has introduced their collection through trunk shows and custom events for many seasons.

“For the second year in a row I am unable to get to Japan to visit my friends and clients. I have prepared a small collection of new pieces for Arts and Science. For a long time, I have been trying to find the perfect chain and for this collection I am presenting some handmade platinum and gold chains which can be made to order in different lengths. I like to combine them with unusual diamond briolettes and other pendants. In addition, there are some new diamond rings using coloured old cut diamonds and some beautiful Keshi pearl earrings which come from a marine oyster and form without any human intervention. I hope very much that I will be able to visit Japan next year and very much miss seeing my friends there” — William Welstead

- Exhibition of works by “Kenichi Seki”
*Please note that visitors with appointments will be prioritized. Details on how to make reservations are provided below.
An exhibition of works by lacquer artist and wood worker Kenichi Seki will be held at HIN / Arts & Science, Nijodori Kyoto.
Kenichi Seki's vessels are simple yet powerful, and have a different charm from similar antique wooden vessels. Seki's way of working is not usual in the Wajima location; where the division of labor amongst artist is the mainstream. Instead, the single artist's thoughts are reflected in every corner, such as carving marks, shapes, and the condition of painting, because the work is done by himself from the wood carving to the lacquer. In Seki’s works a technique called "Kurimono” is used, where the item is carved from a single block of wood, and the lacquer is done in a way where you can still enjoy the features of the wooden characteristics and grains. The process is done by keeping the best use of the charms and interesting features of the wood itself.
This is the first time in two years that HIN will hold a special exhibition for Kenichi Seki since his first solo exhibition held at HIN in 2019. In this exhibition, we will introduce various items including traditional Japanese shapes such as Suhama small plates, Japanese trays, classic containers with lids, as well as display shelves, and wooden cups suitable for everyday use. We look forward to your visit.

All processes of Naho Kamada's production are performed by hand. Kamada work is carried out by hammering various metals using a mallet and checking the feel each time. Although her finished work is made of metal, it has a unique delicate elegance, and the shapes are characterized by the gentle touch to the hands. In this exhibition, we will introduce her cutlery, cups, plates, etc… focusing on her work using silver material.
Please take a look at the fine objects and vessels created by Naho Kamada, each made by considering the fit in her very own hands.

- MARQUESS “Semi-Custom Order 2021”
A semi-custom order event for the bespoke shoe brand <MARQUESS> will be held at SHOES and THINGS for one month from October 4th (Mon.) to October 30th (Sat.).
We also accept semi-custom orders where you can choose from nine individual shoe style, and you may choose the leather/colour of your preference. We include rare options such as crocodile leather, which is not usually available in the lineup. This season, we are introducing a new military boot style called <YORK>, which is included in the seasonal collection as well as an option for a semi-order.
Our MARQUESS order events are held twice a year seasonally, and this time as well designer Shoji Kawaguchi will be present. Kawaguchi will be at the shop for two days, 10.30 (Sat.) and 31 (Sun.) This is a rare opportunity for visitors to consider a personal order while consulting directly with the designer about not only fit but also foot issues. If you already have a pair of MARQUESS shoes purchased at A&S, we would like you to wear them when visiting the shop. Kawaguchi will let you know the condition of your worn-in shoes and give you his personal advice.
<YORK> Military Officers Boots
“My British Military Officers Boots reflect the style’s ‘history and dignity.’ A no-waste simple design with military-like functional beauty. While maintaining the style’s orthodox appearance, we were particular about finishing it in a manner that is appropriate for a women’s shoe.
For this production, we designed a slightly looser wooden pattern than before, giving the boots a comfortable shape with the ankles firmly fixed at the wings. Made from finely embossed French leather, the texture is made to enjoy as well. Unlike its solid appearance, these boots give you a soft feel and lightness when worn.
I have designed the ‘Military Officers Boots’ with the hopes that it will become a standard shoe for all women.
” ― MARQUESS / Shoji Kawaguchi
