Takayoshi Narita “Tasteful Tools”

HIN / Arts & Science, Nijodori Kyoto will reopen in a newly renovated Kyoto Machiya, the former home of A&S Kyoto. To mark the reopening, an exhibition by metalwork artist Takayoshi Narita will be held starting Friday, March 20.

Event details

Following ARTS & SCIENCE’s proposal, “Objects for the Table,” the exhibition will feature tabletop pots, newly designed frying pans, and stainless-steel ladles, plates, and spoons. Narita’s works are created through repeated hammering of metal, resulting in pieces that combine dependable functionality for everyday life with the rich, expressive qualities unique to metalwork.

On the second floor, visitors can also view works by other artists introduced by ARTS & SCIENCE. We invite you to explore the new space at a relaxed pace.

  • On the first day, March 20, entry will be by reservation only until 4:00 PM. Those wishing to attend are asked to register via the reservation form. (Reservations open Wednesday, March 11, at 12:00 PM.)

MESSAGE

“Perhaps because I usually prefer small tableware, I am also drawn to smaller frying pans.
For the past few years, I have been exploring a new form for a small frying pan — one that feels familiar at first glance, yet offers something fresh, and is light enough to reach for effortlessly in use. The shape that existed only vaguely in my mind has finally taken a tangible form.

For this exhibition, I have focused on tools for use on the table as a central theme. Centering on direct-fire iron cookware, stainless-steel tableware, and cutlery, I have assembled a variety of pieces for you to explore.

I would be delighted if you could pick them up and experience them firsthand.”
