Sasawashi is a fabric that ARTS&SCIENCE continues to produce each spring and summer season. Crafted from washi paper combined with natural kumazasa (a type of bamboo grass), it brings together lightness and functionality. This season, we offer three variations—each differing in weave and material—alongside items made from these fabrics.

Sasawashi is a material that combines a natural texture with practicality. It offers excellent breathability and antibacterial and deodorizing properties, while retaining a calm and distinctive character. Light and cool in feel, it remains comfortable even as the heat builds in the coming season. We invite you to experience its texture in store.

Silk Sasawashi Stitch Cloth

Silk SASAWASHI Stitch Cloth / Beige

A delicate stitch cloth crafted from silk and washi. Ultra-fine raw silk yarn, left unprocessed, is used for both warp and weft, while sasawashi yarn is inserted in a sashiko-like manner, creating a surface where small dots appear. A double structure in the weft adds depth, and the natural texture of silk combined with the resilience of washi gives a cool, refined impression.

Sasawashi Mat

SASAWASHI Mat / Dark Brown

A yarn-dyed, high-density nanako weave crafted from 100% sasawashi yarn. Natural kumazasa is incorporated into washi, then twisted into yarn using a specialized machine and woven at high density. It is characterized by a richly textured surface created by fine unevenness, a dry touch, and a moderate firmness.

Sasawashi OX

SASAWASHI OX / Vintage Gray Beige

A simply woven fabric using single-ply sasawashi yarn for both warp and weft. While it has a moderate thickness and a firm texture from its OX (Oxford) structure, it also retains the lightness unique to washi. With repeated wear and washing, it gradually softens—a quality that emerges over time.
