    Masao Kozumi “Glass Onggi”

From Friday April 12th to Sunday April 21st, AT THE CORNER will be hosting our very first solo-exhibition of the glass artist, Masao Kozumi.

Kozumi uses a traditional method dating from the Edo period (between 17th and 19th century) as his model for the creation process. His works evoke a unique green color and a fluctuation due to iron in the glass material. The greatest emphasis which Kozumi puts on his work is that they should be Japanese glasses which match the Japanese table which focus on the “preparation”. In this exhibition where Kozumi’s elegant works with antique allure come together, we will also focus on his new “Glass Onggi” which feature glass vessels glazed in pale colors. We look forward to seeing you there.

    Tomoya Arai Exhibition

Following last year, “AT THE CORNER” welcomes the wood carving artist, Tomoya Arai for his exhibition and sales event.

Arai is an autodidact in the handling of wood and lacquer. His creative process is full of originality and freedom. While his works such as bowls and spoons feature scars made during the carving process, each piece have a rough yet refined allure. His works are made to serve as “tools” for the everyday life and each piece is unique. During his time away from his creative process, Arai plows the field and enjoys living with what nature offers him. Please do not miss this chance to see his collection.
We look forward to your visit.

The artist is scheduled to be present at the venue on Saturday, March 23rd.

「I enjoy using my froe to carve wood. The rackety “me” disappears as a serene “me” takes over its place but once the rackety children come the rackety “me” returns, that’s when my wife comes by and remarks: it’s nice to see you guys having such a good time.」 — Tomoya Arai

    Crocodile Leather “Semi-Custom Order”

“SHOES and THINGS” in Tokyo and “CORNER” in Kyoto will host a pattern-order event featuring items using crocodile leathers. Including new shapes, we bring you a selection of pieces which can be enjoyed throughout your “daily life”.

At A&S, we work with a Japanese traditional tanner who specializes in reptile leathers. Each leather is created by the tanner with more than 50 processes including tanning, dyeing and finishing which takes about 3 months. For the finishing process, a globally rare process is used to create leathers with softer textures. Being richly oiled to the core, each leather has an allure which deepens with continued use which is characteristic to A&S. Due to the uniqueness of the material itself, there are only about 20 companies worldwide who can handle them. Please come and experience the texture of crocodile leather carefully tanned by skilled artisans over time.

*Leathers used to make these items are imported in accordance to the Washington Convention. Not limited to leathers, all other parts will be put to use.
*Ordered items will take about 6 months until they are ready.

    Hisae Higuchi “CAHIERS”

Reliure is a traditional bookbinding technique where a bookbinder puts his/her skill in rebinding a temporary bound book with the request of a booklover. Even in the era of mass printed machine-bound books, this technique continues through this day. In the exhibition “CAHIERS”, whose title is taken from the French word for “notebooks”, we will be exhibiting Higuchi’s works. Her works will also be available for sale. Each of the 14 notebooks created with respect to 14 personalities ranging from painter, architect, dancer, mathematician and travelling violinist is made from different paper and leather collected from various parts of Europe exclusively for this event which makes each piece unique.
