Exhibiton “Sunny & Cloudy” by glass artist Kazumi Tsuji will be held at OVER THE COUNTER from January 21 (Fri) to January 30 (Sun). We introduce various styles of works from “ms.garden,” newly presented at her shop factory zoomer last year. Other series will also be available. We welcome you to come and see a full lineup of Tsuji’s expertise.

“ms. garden” was born from the artist's desire to create items which lift your heart and mood, while we go through the difficulties of the pandemic. She wanted to portray the closer organic relationship we have to nature now, spending more time at home. This series of glassware depicts plants and butterflies with cuts and enamel on the glass surface with a new milky white glass.
We wish you to please come and visit our first exhibition held in 2022. We look forward to seeing you there.

“‘Life has its sunshine and its rain, its days and its nights its peaks and its valleys.’ - This are words from a Snoopy comic strip that I loved to ready in bed when I was little. The saying means, if you are alive, there will be the fun days and hard days. I mean, I've been told this kind of thing many times, and I know it, but in the pandemic I've kind of come back to this very common saying.
A sudden shift was how the pandemic affected me. I was always looking toward the outer world. At the beginning for a while, I was at a lost in it all, but in the second year I found various discoveries and enjoyments in my days of walking around my home, the workshop, and the fields and paths around my neighborhood. I realized that weeds will grow quickly when left alone, hydrangeas grow taller and taller day to day, and white butterflies that dance amongst the cabbage fields show me a familiar scene every same time of the year. These two years have completely reestablished how human society and I believe has created some change in some good ways. I wrote on the glass the very personal feelings I found and felt in my daily life, through the weather, the plants in the garden and the animals I meet. It was an unfamiliar form of my own production, and will be kept as good record for myself and the life we are living right now. If I know many people can empathize with my current creations, that is more happiness than I imagine for these results of my new series of works.

New 2021 pots by Steve Harrison have arrived from England. These works will be introduced at Arts & Science Fukuoka from January 7th (Friday) to January 16th (Sunday), 2022. Harrison’s work, which has been introduced in Japan by Arts & Science with great care since its opening in 2003, will be available in the Fukuoka area to see in person for the very first time.

Steve Harrison's often uses the traditional method of pottery - Salt Glazing. As the salt is sprayed onto the pots while they are firing in the kiln, the chemical reaction between the salt and glaze creates organic patterns on the surfaces. The interesting part of this process is not knowing the final outcome of the pots until the kiln is opened. Steve Harrison has fascinated many people with this technique. While the pots are a classical western style, Steve Harrison’s original characteristics show strongly in this handmade process. Arts & Science has been working with Harrison for 18 years. We continue to receive his very best works several times a year in Japan, and we have always shared a special exhibition of his works every two years. Sometimes, like〈BIG IN JAPAN〉, creative director Sonya Park proposes a unique theme together with Harrison. The new arrival of pots at Fukuoka are mainly works Harrison has created in 2021. All of his pots are marked with the year of production, which represents his identity along with his other hallmark stamps. He has chosen himself his best work available including items such as cups, teapots, and bowls made in salt glaze of various colors and sizes. Although at times Harrison will make special items with a certain theme or concept for Japan, his basic concept is defined by pots that can be enjoyed in your daily lifestyle which do not always cause for a special occasion. We welcome you to take a look at this new collection of pots created especially for Arts & Science. We look forward to your visit.

I often have adventures where I explore different artistic ideas however, I always return to these utilitarian pots. They remind me that ceremony and special occasions don’t need to be reserved for this kind of work. I feel that they imbue everyday living and enrich the moment. This is more poignant in pandemic times where we need to recognize and celebrate the ordinary because it is difficult to search out the extraordinary.

TENTHOUSANDTHINGS is a jewelry brand based in New York. Arts & Science have presented the brand’s jewelry for many seasons. This year as well, we will present the brand’s newest collection. The presentation will begin from December 10th (Friday) at A&S Marunouchi until the beginning of the new year.

This time, we are presenting works from the “Beads” collection, a classic series created since the early days of the brand, the “Fetched stone” collection that features hand-cut rough stones into a rounded form where you can feel the raw cut of the stones themselves, and the “Sculpture” collection that uses special sculptural techniques. We will also introduce a one-of-a-kind necklace named the “Waterfall,” which is decorated with rare stones inspired by the vision of water overflowing on rocks from a waterfall. In this presentation, you can enjoy the specific production techniques and the vision of TENTHOUSANDTHINGS in its entirety.

For both designers, Japan is the country they love more than anywhere else.

An exhibition of works by lacquer artist and wood worker Kenichi Seki will be held at HIN / Arts & Science, Nijodori Kyoto.

Kenichi Seki's vessels are simple yet powerful, and have a different charm from similar antique wooden vessels. Seki's way of working is not usual in the Wajima location; where the division of labor amongst artist is the mainstream. Instead, the single artist's thoughts are reflected in every corner, such as carving marks, shapes, and the condition of painting, because the work is done by himself from the wood carving to the lacquer. In Seki’s works a technique called "Kurimono” is used, where the item is carved from a single block of wood, and the lacquer is done in a way where you can still enjoy the features of the wooden characteristics and grains. The process is done by keeping the best use of the charms and interesting features of the wood itself.

This is the first time in two years that HIN will hold a special exhibition for Kenichi Seki since his first solo exhibition held at HIN in 2019. In this exhibition, we will introduce various items including traditional Japanese shapes such as Suhama small plates, Japanese trays, classic containers with lids, as well as display shelves, and wooden cups suitable for everyday use. We look forward to your visit.

DOWN THE STAIRS is pleased to announce its reopening with new friends. Beginning Saturday, November 20, 2021, the newly conceived culinary project will bring together the sensibilities of Paris-based restaurant MAISON with ARTS & SCIENCE.

For many years, A&S has enjoyed a close dialogue and collaboration with Chef Sota Atsumi, owner and director of MAISON. Chef Atsumi's extraordinary creations were first presented at A&S as part of our food event . His idea that delicious food is born from quality ingredients is deeply connected to the A&S sensibility. As a longer-term culinary project, our new collaboration promises an opportunity to share in depth the stories and experiences of his carefully-sourced ingredients with our visitors.

The menu is developed by MAISON and features locally produced seasonal Japanese ingredients selected by Chef Atsumi. Chef Ryoichi Matsumoto has come from MAISON to direct our kitchen in Tokyo along with our pastry chef Miki Yokomakura. We hope the dishes will please body and soul.

A&S AOYAMA is honored to hold a sales fair event for artist Masaaki Iijima’s Bamboo basket bags from Thursday, November 11th 2021.

In his workshop located in the village of Kisogun in Nagano, bamboo craftsman Masaaki Iijima carries out every exacting step of his basket production. Arts & Science has presented his works from 2019. In this exhibition we feature collaborative bags of Iijima’s selected bamboo higo strips colored with natural plant-based dyes and A&S original fabrics used as the inner cloths. Each work is a one-of-a-kind.

OVER THE COUNTER in Tokyo is pleased to announce a special exhibition for the collection “Blue” from Naho Kamada.

All processes of Naho Kamada's production are performed by hand. Kamada work is carried out by hammering various metals using a mallet and checking the feel each time. Although her finished work is made of metal, it has a unique delicate elegance, and the shapes are characterized by the gentle touch to the hands. In this exhibition, we will introduce her cutlery, cups, plates, etc… focusing on her work using silver material.

Please take a look at the fine objects and vessels created by Naho Kamada, each made by considering the fit in her very own hands.

For a long time, the “Kikatsu series” was sold only to venues such as bars or restaurants. The designs are inspired by European antique glasses. In this way, there are many variations of especially the smaller-sized glasses. This sales fair is a special opportunity to view and purchase all 119 types of glasses from the Kikatsu series in one location.

We include rare options such as crocodile leather, which is not usually available in the lineup. Our MARQUESS order events are held twice a year seasonally, and this time as well designer Shoji Kawaguchi will be present. Kawaguchi will be at the shop for two days, 10.30 (Sat.) and 31 (Sun.) This is a rare opportunity for visitors to consider a personal order while consulting directly with the designer about not only fit but also foot issues. If you already have a pair of MARQUESS shoes purchased at A&S, we would like you to wear them when visiting the shop. ＜YORK＞ Military Officers Boots
“My British Military Officers Boots reflect the style’s ‘history and dignity.’ A no-waste simple design with military-like functional beauty. While maintaining the style’s orthodox appearance, we were particular about finishing it in a manner that is appropriate for a women’s shoe.
For this production, we designed a slightly looser wooden pattern than before, giving the boots a comfortable shape with the ankles firmly fixed at the wings. Made from finely embossed French leather, the texture is made to enjoy as well. Unlike its solid appearance, these boots give you a soft feel and lightness when worn.
I have designed the ‘Military Officers Boots’ with the hopes that it will become a standard shoe for all women.

A solo exhibition by ceramic artist Adam Silverman will be held at HIN / Arts & Science in Kyoto. The works were produced on both coasts of the United States: Atwater in the West, and Rhode Island in the East, where local materials including clay, seaweed, salt, wood, and crop husks were used. In this exhibition, a series of works created through an experimental process will be on display.

Adam's works have a unique aesthetic and expression from the form of his glazing techniques. HIN has mainly selected works such as bowls that are as functional as they are beautiful. We invite you to view these special pieces in person.

Kenichi Takanaka, who produces various works as a acknowledged painter, calligrapher, and potter, will hold a special exhibition at HIN / Arts & Science in Kyoto and OVER THE COUNTER in Tokyo.

This special project with Takanaka is an annual event at Arts & Science. This year, in addition to pottery and paintings, books published independently by the artist all under the theme “Takanaka Kaiju Encyclopedia,” will be unveiled for the first time. We invite you to discover the world of Kenichi Takanaka, who immerses himself in studying and pondering classical Oriental literature amidst the harsh but rich environment of the mountains, and who continues to devote himself more and more freely to his creative work, following his passion.

“I am fond of kaiju - monsters. I also like monsters that fight other monsters. And I like monster figures, but only those produced by Marusan and Bullmark in 1966, the year I was born, and the following few years. I don’t find the ones produced after that period to be interesting. When I was a child, I used to play pretend and hold battles among my monster figures in the sandbox in the yard and during bath time, making sounds like “Gao” (“Roar”) and “Dokan” (“Boom”) by myself... When I think about it now, that was everything. The me of fifty years ago, irreplaceable, is this me. ”　―Kenichi Takanaka

A pre-order event for furniture brand IFUJI will be held at HIN / Arts & Science in Kyoto and OVER THE COUNTER in Tokyo. This is their 4th exhibition at Arts & Science.

This time, we are introducing IFUJI’s new works including the “Folding side table” – a table with a combination of the top and foldable legs that can also be used as a tray, the “Personal chest” – perfect to store small important belongings, and the "Rim box series" made this time in an open structure without a lid. In addition, we will also share a wide variety of items from small to large furniture.

IFUJI’s intentions are for the users to spend quality time at home with a wide range of furniture proposals serving as tools in the home. We welcome you to visit this a special exhibition with IFUJI.

New works made in 2021 from Steve Harrison's have just arrived at Arts & Science.
The exhibition will be held both at OVER THE COUNTER in Tokyo and HIN / Arts & Science in Kyoto from Monday, July 26th to Sunday, August 1st. The exhibition "Carafes and Vessels" by glass artist Masao Kozumi will be held at OVER THE COUNTER in Tokyo and HIN / Arts & Science in Kyoto.
In this exhibition, we will introduce Kozumi’s new works including carafes and cups especially made for Arts & Science. The entire process, from developing the concepts to creating the final shape, took almost one year, and the works were born through trial and error. With his essential lines of work upfront, we have also commissioned several types of glass that are not usually produced, including a new shade of green glass bottles, Onggis, parfait glasses and classic Japanese wind chimes - all suitable for the summer season.

We invite you to view Masao Kozumi's glass works and enjoy the unique colors and forms using hand-blown and mold-blown classic techniques dated back to the Edo period.

“What we call a Kansuibin is a lidded carafe; the body is a bottle-shaped jug with a versatile lid that can be used as a cup. In the planning process, I asked myself these questions – “How did the craftsmen see this imported carafe back in the day? What kind of resemblance did it have when it was mentioned in classic writing?” I was blowing the mold while becoming deeply indulged in this nostalgic mist of imagination. I would be happy to see this Kansuibin used today placed near your seat in a living room or by your pillow side as a perfect vessel to quench your thirst while relaxing.”　― Masao Kozumi

Mai Yamamoto is a glass model artist. Yamamoto uses refractions and colors of light on mirror and matte surfaces using her original sense of textures. In her artwork you can see she makes full use of of the tools and cutting techniques used in Edo Kiriko faceted glass. (A Japanese technique from the Edo-period).. From June 4th, a selection of her new works inspired by the seasons, the air and the familiarity of ordinary items that have a personal resonation made in her vision will be available at A&S AOYAMA.

The items introduced on this occasion express the scent of wind and air by the texture of glass. The patterns are made by adding texture to the glass with different degrees of rough-cut touches.

Perfume Bottle
Considering the long times spent at the home these days, this series was created by imagining the air to feel as if you are walking through a forest. This artwork was made to capture the fresh feeling and scents of soil and trees.

A work inspired by natural objects such as nuts and stones. The fine cuts on the surface are reflected in the transparent part on the top surface, and you can enjoy the changes in expression when object is moved.
