Perfumer H for ARTS&SCIENCE: WOOD LAND

The launch of our long-awaited new perfume will begin on Friday, April 7, 2023.

The fragrance WOOD LAND was created in response to the experience of living in Tokyo, where Sonya Park, Founder of Arts & Science, craves trees and the natural landscape. She wondered, "What would an oasis of woodland smell like in central Tokyo?" And Lyn Harris immediately had a vision for a cleansing fragrance: Woodland, a healing, green escape from the homogeneity of the concrete cityscape. We hope you experience this sense of escape when you wear it on your skin.

WOOD LAND fragrance: With wood notes, the scent opens with bitter orange and gradually develops notes of eucalyptus, black pepper, and moist moss. As if walking through the cool fog of the forest, the finish slowly envelops the wearer in the sensory experience of juniper, cedar, sandalwood, and frankincense.
If you enjoy layering scents, this fragrance is in the same wood family as INK, RAIN WOOD, and INDIAN WOOD.
    Fragrance concentration: 20%

*Handblown glass bottles by glass artist Michael Ruh are also available. The bottles are amber in color and made especially for Arts & Science’s WOOD LAND fragrance. Click here for details

ZANINI × ARTS & SCIENCE Collaboration Collection

Marco Zanini started his eponymous brand ZANINI in 2019 after working as creative director at Halston, Rochas, and Schiaparelli. Beginning with the first collection, Arts & Science has handled the brand in Japan on an exclusive basis, and we are pleased to announce and present our first collaborative collection developed with ZANINI at A&S Aoyama, starting Friday, November 18, 2022.

This season Marco Zanini has taken time off from his own collection to follow his long-standing interest in A&S clothing development, particularly the deep and evolving relationship to specialized Japanese fabrics and sartorial traditions. The new capsule collection ZANINI × ARTS & SCIENCE fuses the visions of both brands while providing a new path of exploration for Zanini, whose own line is rooted exclusively in Italian production and textiles. Made entirely in Japan, the capsule collection explores the possibilities of collaboration from three different angles:

・A&S styles made with ZANINI fabrics
・ZANINI styles made with A&S fabrics
・Items made from ZANINI styles and patterns

For the launch of this collection, we welcome Marco Zanini to Japan. This long-awaited opportunity to meet his customers at A&S was delayed due to travel restrictions in place since the launch of ZANINI in 2019. We are, therefore, especially pleased to invite you to A&S Aoyama to meet this exceptional designer in person on Friday evening, November 18th.

*We plan to release an interview with Marco Zanini. Please stay tuned for the update!

    Kumihimo” Combi Braid Belt

At Arts & Science, we always incorporate traditional Japanese craftsmanship into our development. This is a part of our efforts to create valuable products and to save the quality handmade skills and spirit of Japanese craftsmen that are slowly becoming lost in modern day production. Until now, we have mainly used the traditional techniques as part of an expression for smaller items such as Shinafu, a traditional cloth fabric, bamboo baskets using madake bamboo, deerskin with inden lacquer, and Jomon knitting. In this feature, we will introduce our efforts with “Kumihimo.”

    r a s a i 2022 Summer Collection Pop-up

Based in India, asiam studio, which designs, dyes and sews fabrics and is renowned for their quality and consideration of the local people and the environment, presents ‘r a s a i ‘. Arts & Science is one of the few stores in the world that has presented ‘r a s a i ‘ from their first collection.
From July 1st, we will be launching the new collection at A&S Aoyama, Marunouchi, and Kyoto. As a preview, A&S Fukuoka, our newest brick-and-mortar shop, will be the first to hold a pop-up event from Friday, June 24th. During the event, the entire collection on offer from Arts & Science this season will be on display at the Fukuoka location.

Founded in India in 1996 by two partners, asiam studio is a company that handles the entire production process of creating soft furnishings and clothing, from design and dyeing to sewing, and has collaborated mainly with established European brands. From 2018, the founder-designer started the process of renewing and developing the ‘r a s a i ‘ label, which was the starting point of the company, and since 2021, the founder-designer has proceeded with plans to create a new company, asiam studio living, to focus on various activities such as creating limited edition products and developing concepts. asiam studio’s goals include producing items with a universal appeal that enrich the lives of users. The conscious use of the back side of the fabric as a reversible factor is always calculated in their design, and the possibilities of design are never bound by age, gender, or size.

For the 2022 Spring/Summer r a s a i collection, we will introduce new items from the main collection along with special items made specifically for Arts & Science and reflecting A&S’s requests. These items for A&S are the result of detailed adjustments in fabric selection, stitch positions, and dye tones. The colorful items include jackets and coats made of Woven Checks, a colorful checked fabric, and reversible jackets, blouses, and dresses made of Mulmul, a classic lightweight fabric.

    Woven Checks
This fabric was one of the designer’s custom-woven projects that had been kept carefully aside until the right opportunity appeared to develop items for a limited-edition series. Currently, it is not easy to manufacture high-quality, hand-woven fabrics in a multicolor check due to the increasing demand for khadi, a traditional cloth of the region. The unique texture of hand weaving and the expression of r a s a i’s standard sewing machine stitching are characteristic of this product, which is finished entirely by hand sewing. To develop this limited-edition collection, Arts & Science has selected four types of fabrics and styles from r a s a i ’s sample collection.

    Mulmul
The Indian bed quilt “Razai” is the origin of the brand name, ‘r a s a i.’ The cotton wadding is gently wrapped in a cotton fabric called Mulmul and hand-sewn. Mulmul has historically been woven by the most highly skilled weavers in India. Also called, “woven wind,” this is an ultra-thin, soft and translucent cotton fabric with excellent breathability. Nowadays, the technique is close to becoming lost as power looms have taken over the majority of production in India, and this special attention and skill are not required when sewing in the modern way. In this r a s a i collection, in addition to the standard double-layered pants and underdresses, special items made only for A&S were created through fine adjustments including customized stitch placements, patterns, color dye selection and color combinations.

‘r a s a i’ is a line of clothing & home items. The brand name and concept is inspired by soft hand-stitched bed quilts treasured in India during winter months. ‘r a s a i’ embraces an adaptable style for all ages, body types, genders and cultures characterized by the reversible nature of the quilts, and their items often utilize both sides of the fabric in the collection’s design. Their items age gracefully over time. Arts & Science continues to present various categories of items from the ‘r a s a i’ collection in a seasonless cycle.

    Peter Ivy “Positive Space”

An exhibition by glass artist Peter Ivy will be held at three Arts & Science locations in Tokyo, Kyoto and Fukuoka. “Positive Space” will be unveiled for the first time at this exhibition. We invite you to come and see Ivy’s new series of works, which represent a new and very distinct take on glassware compared to the artist’s existing style.

In preparation for our special presentation, Ivy said that he made many new and different attempts. “Positive Space” is one result of his great efforts and presents a series of vases born out of his intense research on material and repeated experimentation. Together with “Positive Space,” there will be a lineup of his traditional grey glassware. Please enjoy the contrast of colors. In addition, a new item Ojyu (a Japanese-style stackable bento box) will also be presented.

The beginning of Spring is the perfect time to introduce Peter Ivy’s colorful new work, and we look forward to welcoming you to enjoy this rare opportunity to view works that are not included in our usual selection at the shops.
