Friday, October 9 to Monday, October 19, an exhibition of lacquerware (urushi<\/em> is Japanese for \u2018lacquer\u2019) by Mitsuhiro Yazawa and Hiroaki Yazawa, who work out of Kamakura, will be held at HIN Nijodori Kyoto. Over the years, Mitsuhiro Yazawa has created numerous lacquerware pieces, combining an imaginative approach with a high level of technical skill. From among the works he has created to date, we introduce vessels selected by A&S. While learning the craft at his father Mitsuhiro\u2019s side, Hiroaki Yazawa has created vessels drawing on his own sensibility. Although their work shares a certain quality, each has a distinct presence. For Hiroaki, this will be the first time his work is introduced by A&S, as well as the first in the Kansai region.<\/p>\n

Lacquerware artist Mitsuhiro Yazawa was born in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, in 1946. After withdrawing from Musashino Art University in 1966, Yazawa studied woodcarving techniques under a sculptor for two years. He learned the technique of lacquer at his father\u2019s studio, which specialized in Kamakura-bori. Lacquerware artist, born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1977. Coming from a family of lacquerware artisans, Yazawa grew up using lacquerware daily, developing an appreciation for its comfort and beauty from an early age. He studied film at university but later chose to pursue a career in lacquer arts. Working primarily with domestically grown wood, he carefully selects techniques such as woodturning and hand-carving to suit each form.
