exhibition by KITAWORKS, a workshop creating furniture and products incorporating metal, will be held at HIN Kyoto from Friday, July 10, and at HIN Aoyama from Friday, July 31. At HIN Aoyama, a selection of products will be exhibited and available for purchase, including the new stainless steel <em>soban<\/em> (a traditional Korean small table), umbrella stands, and incense holders.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In addition, as the exhibition\u2019s central new work, the stainless steel stool NYORO will be presented at both venues. structure, function, and usability into a single form, from which a quiet beauty emerges.<br \/>\nWith NYORO, I moved slightly away from those elements of furniture-making and took as my starting point something I have long valued in my work: erasing the traces of processing.<br \/>\nI file away the offsets where parts meet, polish the weld marks, and remove as much evidence of handwork as possible.<br \/>\nYet in doing so, slight fluctuations remain that cannot be completely erased.<br \/>\nTo me, these are not qualities intentionally added, but something more like the atmosphere that naturally emerges in the process of making.<br \/>\nA sheet of metal is rolled, welded, and subtly deformed by heat.<br \/>\nThe more precisely I try to make it, the more these fluctuations appear as unintended by-products. The company was renamed KITAWORKS in 2009 and continues its more than forty-year tradition of producing custom-made furniture using welding techniques. The pieces are made with a range of metals, including iron, stainless steel, copper, and brass, and are specially designed to function seamlessly with existing furniture and in the spaces where they will be enjoyed.
