Friday, June 19, a ten-day exhibition by karakami artisan K\u014d Kado and artist Patricia Curtan will be held at HIN Aoyama. The presentation brings together works developed over two years of dialogue, where printmaking and karakami practices intersect and respond to one another.","flexible_content":[{"acf_fc_layout":"flexible_text","text":"<p>In this exhibition, the works presented are based on Patricia Curtan&#8217;s drawings and prints, which Kado reinterprets as karakami patterns and renders through woodblock printing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Curtan\u2019s delicate observations of plants and birds, together with Kado\u2019s karakami techniques carried forward through tradition, form the foundation of this encounter. From this dialogue emerge karakami works, along with folding screens, posters, boxes, notebooks, cards, and more.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The two artists developed their collaboration through the exchange of works, extensive correspondence by email, and Kado&#8217;s visit to California, gradually sharing their ideas and creative contexts while aligning the direction of their practice. 2014, Patricia Curtan&#8217;s exhibition was held at ARTS&amp;SCIENCE. I had known her work through the menu design for Chez Panisse, but it was the first time I had seen her printed works in person. The color combinations, layout, illustrations, and the texture of the paper. For me, having studied graphic design in San Francisco, it felt somewhat nostalgic, and I still keep the invitation card, files, and posters from that exhibition carefully with me.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When I was approached for a second project with A&amp;S, I immediately thought of Patricia and asked if I could create karakami works based on her motifs. This became the starting point of my exchange with Patricia, and over the course of two years, through letters and emails, the present karakami works were born.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Neither Japanese nor Western, yet somehow both. I feel that a kind of mysterious, wondrous karakami has emerged. Paper and print as media, and our shared fascination with their techniques\u2014this is &#8220;Printed Conversations&#8221; between two people drawn to them. Our mutual friend, Sonya Park, suggested that we might like to collaborate on a project. I sent Kado-san some of my prints in hopes that he might find something interesting. He selected two images (blackbirds on persimmon tree, and lentil plants) and adapted them to his process with beautiful results. Kado graduated from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco with a degree in graphic design. He worked as a freelance designer in New York before returning to Japan to join a celebrated karakami studio. He struck out on his own in 2009, opening his independent shop and studio Kamisoe in Nishijin, Kyoto. Kado develops his designs specially for individual clients, taking into consideration their purposes and needs. His designs are distinguished by a careful balance between figure and ground \u2013 between the open space of the sheet of paper and the rhythmic pattern of the stamp.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Patricia Curtan<br \/>\nArtist and printmaker. While studying letterpress printing, she met Alice Waters, owner of Chez Panisse, and went on to work there as a cook.
