Aoyama is pleased to host an exhibition by metalworker Yumi Nakamura, whose vessels suggest a variety of uses. The exhibition features a selection of her functional pieces.","flexible_content":[{"acf_fc_layout":"flexible_text","text":"<p>Titled <em>\u201cUtilitarian\u201d<\/em> at the suggestion of ARTS &amp; SCIENCE, this exhibition brings together Yumi Nakamura\u2019s works\u2014from iconic kettles and teapots to pieces of varied forms and functions created throughout her career. Many of the objects have a sculptural beauty, yet remain fully functional. They are both tools and works of art.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I have always been drawn to the timeless qualities of tools humans have used over time\u2014the strength of materials, the beauty that develops with age, and the human sense of humor they embody. I have absorbed these qualities in my own way, transforming them into the forms I create today. Objects that are both functional and sculpturally beautiful\u2014this has been my goal since I began making art.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The owner of ARTS &amp; SCIENCE, Sonya Park, named this collection \u201cUtilitarian.\u201d Literally, it translates to \u201cutilitarianism,\u201d referring to things that tend to produce pleasure, good, or happiness\u2014or, conversely, prevent pain, harm, or unhappiness. Her interpretation felt surprisingly fitting.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>These are objects that enrich a space simply by being present. Through daily use, they develop a personal beauty unique to each individual. This exhibition gathers such works. Born in Saitama Prefecture in 1981, she graduated in 2005 from Musashino Art University, Department of Industrial, Interior, and Craft Design, majoring in Interior Design. She began working in metalcraft in 2008. After living in Nara Prefecture, she is now based in Tokyo, where she continues her creative practice.
