For many years, Suk-Keun Kang has explored the theme of ‘nature’ through his work with wood and lacquer. The vessels, carefully shaped to reflect the unique character of the wood and in response to the changing seasons and humidity, possess a quiet elegance that mirrors the natural lines and colors of the world. In this exhibition, you will encounter lacquerware and objects that are both light and highly functional, created using a distinctive lacquer heat curing technique that the artist has developed and perfected over time.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all encounter many ‘winds’ throughout our lives, and each wind is filled with a range of colors and emotions.\u201d These words from the artist form the theme of the exhibition, The Sign of the Wind.<\/em> We invite you to experience his works, where modern sensibility and philosophy seamlessly come together.<\/p>\n

Suk-Keun Kang was born and raised in the lush natural surroundings of Sokcho, Gangwon Province, South Korea. Kang\u2019s journey as a woodworker began with crafting wooden toys for his child, which led him to pursue woodworking in earnest. Drawing inspiration from nature, he creates a wide range of works, from everyday vessels to large-scale pieces. Using primarily locally sourced wood, he incorporates the traditional Korean lacquer technique Ottchil (\uc63b\uce60) while also employing a unique high-temperature curing method he developed to enhance the durability and functionality of his pieces.
