At this exhibition, Peter Ivy will unveil his latest groundbreaking creation: a pendant light featuring a shade made of white glass. Ivy’s process involved visualizing lighting fixture concepts, designing components using CAD, and prototyping them by physically creating the parts with a 3D printer. Each glass shade is meticulously hand-blown without the use of molds, and all the fixtures are bespoke, crafted to order.<\/p>\n

\u201cSet against the rare panorama of shrines and temples standing side by lies the ‘Ryudo Kenkyusho’ studio and home-gallery nestled within a 70-year-old traditional Japanese house that I personally designed and continue to renovate. It’s been around six years since the building reconstruction got underway, and over the past few years, while living in my nearly completed home, I\u2019ve been contemplating lighting.<\/p>\n

The ever-changing relationship between natural light and space, unfolding with each passing moment. Just the right amount of light where it’s needed.<\/p>\n

Crafted without molds, each glass shade is hand-blown individually. White glass diffuses light throughout the space, while mirrored glass offers a glimpse of the bulb’s filament. I particularly enjoy the soft glow gently spilling from the top, reminiscent of old lanterns, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.<\/p>\n

I conceptualized and designed the solid copper fixtures connecting the shade and the socket using CAD, and I was also particular about having them produced by a domestic manufacturing company.<\/p>\n

Pairing the age-old skill of glass blowing, dating back 2000 years, with cutting-edge modern technology – isn\u2019t this contrast fascinating?<\/p>\n

The resulting piece then eventually achieves its final form through the gradual transformation of the copper fixtures into a refined black patina over time.\u201d<\/p>\n
