This season’s collection theme for amachi. is “Notion of Forms”.
“Into the tree” is a special collection of collaboration knits much like an art piece made by one piece at a time. The designer himself describes the knits as his most primitive and organic expression out of his entire collection. Every piece takes several weeks to finish so the production was limited to 5 pieces this season, and they will be sold exclusively by A&S.
At the same time, we will also introduce the products of the amachi. The AW20 collection “Notion of Forms”, was born from his research on the connection between people and trees before the birth of modern urban environments, and how this relationship evolved and built into a modern civilization.

It is interesting how people interact with nature and trees in particular, to look into the process it took to build our present civilization of modern urban space. It can be said, our urban space is a very special place in human history – an environment made by people where trees and wood does not exist around us. This collection was born from excavating deeper into this concept.
There is evidence that the concept of “circular” shape, which is often seen in the earliest human-made objects such as Stonehenge, originated from the cross section of the tree. There is also a theory that the structure that combines the linear shapes that is commonly seen in modern cities originates and is similar to the square timber made from breaking trees.
It was very interesting for designer Yoshimoto Tenchi to go in depth with the concept of the shape and material of trees (= Notion of Forms), and how it built the foundation of our current cities. This season’s concept portrays his process on how he unraveled this theory.

Specific examples include his hand knits “Into the tree,” and “Wood cut knits” which reflect the primitive tree shapes and non-uniform circles in the patterns and design elements. “Primitive form shirts,” characteristics contain the cross section of trees with pattern work. From various other perspectives, the concept is incorporated into the structure and fabric of the clothing.

  • amachi. × Kurina Ninomiya “Into the tree” (¥420,000 +Tax)

The shape of the tree is expressed in various aspects of this collection. Among them, Tenchi describes “Into the tree,” as the most primitive and organic expression. This consists of 5 individual knit pieces that embody the image of wearing the entire essence of a tree – with the structure, knitting method, and technique of the thread.
The entire piece is crocheted, made by seamlessly knitting non-uniform cylindrical structures that are each a unique form. It is far from a mass-produced method, where each part is assigned to a pattern. The manufacturing process is done in a way that the crochet grows organically. Yarns are made from a variety of materials, including British merino wool, mixed yarns of kid mohair and silk, original spun extra-thick silk, and undyed wool from Portugal that is hand-crafted from cutting to spinning by farm owners. All materials are intricately incorporated, and each piece results in a one-of-a-kind style and existence; a knit that can be respectfully called an art piece.
