- Plum’s | Stuffed Animals
From Thursday, November 23rd, stuffed doll artist Kyoko Umezu will bring her new work of <Plum’s> to both Tokyo and Kyoto. All kinds of polar bear will be showcased in &SHOP Aoyama, and “Wabisuke”, series of animals sitting on zabuton, a Japanese cushion shall line HIN / Arts & Science, Nijodori Kyoto. Ms. Umezu will be present at the store on the 23rd. Hope you will join us.
- PROFILE
- Plum’s Kyoko Umezu / After studying teddy bear making at Cuddly Labo in Daikanyama, she presented her first collection in 1997. In 2010, she had her first own exhibition at Billiken Gallery in Aoyama. Her creation is based on the fundamentals of teddy bear making with addition of a realistic facial expression of bears and other animals.

To celebrate the coming New Year, HIN / Arts & Science, Nijodori Kyoto and OVER THE COUNTER welcomes the florist, Mitate for an exclusive order event of New Year ornaments. New Year ornaments has been traditionally used to welcome the Shinto deities who are believed to come visit us at the beginning of the New Year. Ranging from modern kadomatsu to Japanese cypress ornaments made in collaboration with the wood artist Masaru Kawai, Mitate’s works are traditional yet stylish and contemporary. During the event, we will also take orders for waramochi, exclusive only at A&S during this period. Please do not miss this occasion to create your original ornaments of the season.
- PROFILE
- Mitate was established in April 2013, in Shichiku, Kita-ku in Kyoto. Mitate creates flower arrangements and ornaments using boxes by using wild flowers and plants of the season. Mitate’s aesthetics are expressed through its unique style to create something completely different from the original material.

ARTS&SCIENCE in collaboration with TOOGOOD will hold a new installation, THE FORAGER, taking place in both Tokyo and Kyoto.
THE FORAGER is inspired by the busy traveler an avid collector of beautiful foreign objects. The Forager Suit consisting of gilet, tunic and trousers, new and exclusive TOOGOOD shapes realized in ARTS&SCIENCE fabrics.
Inspired by 16th century Edo-period screens, Faye Toogood’s wallpaper collection for CALICO WALLPAPER transforms the gallery space into an English Landscape, accompanied by Faye’s Roly-Poly furniture and a collection of British found objects.
For the opening of Tokyo, designer Erica Toogood will be available as well. Please come and enjoy the world of TOOGOOD.- PROFILE
- Eponymous brand established by sisters Faye and Erica Toogood. Faye’s celebrated work as a designer has been focused in furniture, interiors, and sculpture. Erica has honored her craft in tailoring as a pattern cutter for several London fashion designers. Their clothing line, inspired by traditional workwear combines their sensitivity to material and shape.

- Kenichi Takanaka | Nanako
It is our pleasure to announce the exhibition “Nanako” by painter, calligrapher, and potter Kenichi Takanaka. “Nanako” is the artist’s second exhibition at ARTS&SCIENCE and it will be presented in both Tokyo and Kyoto.
“Nanako” is a method of creating a relief pattern that resembles fish roe. The craftsman is said to “beat” or “sow” the texture into a surface using a special Nanako chisel. The exhibition will showcase 100 works that Kenichi Takanaka has created around the theme of soil, accompanied by a hanging calligraphic scroll.
The wife pitied the hen that was killed by the weasel, and she made a soup out of its corpse. She was in awe after taking one bite, saying, “The weasel must have been a skillful killer.” The taste of flesh is equal to how well you kill. Kenichi Takanaka- PROFILE
- Kenichi Takanaka was born in Toride-shi, Ibaraki in 1966. An autodidact, Takanaka began his education at Gakushuin University, later leaving in order to teach himself the techniques of calligraphy, painting, and pottery. In 1993 he set up his kiln and studio in Otaki, Chiba, where he devotes himself to his artistic activities. Takanaka’s works are exhibited in various art galleries in Japan and abroad.

- LITMUS | Indigo Dyeing Special Order Event
It is our privilege to announce that we will host the semi-order event by Indigo Studio 〈LITMUS〉at AT THE CORNER. We will offer an indigo dye special order for numerous items, and in addition, you will have a chance to experience the “Aizome”, the trans indigo dyeing of LITMUS.

Exclusively ARTS&SCIENCE item, you will have an opportunity to have your natural fiber clothing to be indigo dyed (for white, ecru color).Mr. Kazuo Yoshikawa from LITMUS will be available to consult you with your favorite indigo color.
2. MOON CALENDAR 2018
The popular MOON CALENDAR will be available. Three colors of sky, pale-blue green, and indigo which cannot be ordered regularly, are available for the order, and beside that you can order a frame exclusively for the calendar.

For this event, we have prepared an ARTS&SCIENCE original tote bag, pouch, handkerchief, and work coat in white color, and you will be able to order and arrange them out of three color option, sky, pale-blue green, and indigo.- PROFILE
- LITMUS/ Indigo dyeing studio was established by Yuji Matsui and Kazuo Yoshikawa who was fascinated by the indigo dyed smock frock which they found in the antique market. LITMUS is known for its “Ash liquid fermentation” which is a Japanese ancient dyeing method which you add a lye from charcoal, Japanese sake, and wheat into a “Sukumo” dye produced from indigo leaves, which you ferment it by dyeing liquid. They stay royal to these method, but they do not forget to introduce their own Japanese indigo color being freed from the constraints of typical materials and methods.

- Made to Order Furniture by Ifuji x Arts & Science
The furniture order event by a collaboration between woodcraft artist Masashi Ifuji and ARTS&SCIENCE will be held in Tokyo and Kyoto. Different size of collapsible shelf, and brand new piece of mizuya drawer will be at your hand. In addition to that, the bespoke color will be available for his basic lines. The simple metal fittings used for each items in various parts are produced by the <Kanaguya>. Please join us and find your own carefully made furniture that will be there for you in your everyday lives.
“On May, we relocated ourselves to a larger workshop. What we create differs as an environment differs. I have noticed I wanted to create something large. Nothing else has been different but that, but somehow there is always certain matter changing. - Masashi Ifuji/ Woodcraft artist / Born 1966. He established his Ifuji Furniture Workshop in town of Gujo Hachiman on 2003. On 2006, he had his first exhibition. On 2009, he relocated his workshop to the city of Matsumoto in Nagano prefecture. He is currently running a café and gallery in the building which he reformed the old pharmacy built in Showa 8th. He also manages LABORATORIO which is consisted of the BOX SHOP and faber LABORATORIO.>HP

- dosa | Beni Pink
dosa is a company built on the use of traditional crafts and handwork found through the travels of Christina Kim. Please join us for “Beni Pink”, her exploration of vibrant pinks and the tradition of benibana dyeing at AT THE CORNER. This event will feature shawls and items from dosa’s standard issue line dyed benibana pink at a workshop led by master craftsman and third generation dyer, Dr. Kazuki Yamazaki. Also on display will be “We Kiss”, a public art project by artist Kathy Klein, who collaborated with dosa to produce shawls based on her work. dosa’s installation shares the tradition of benibana dyeing as well as Christina’s designs. - PROFILE
- Dr. Kazuki Yamazaki is a master craftsman and third generation natural dyer. In 1985 he started the Kusaki-Kobo Dye Studio, a natural dye studio and research space in Kawasaki. After completing a master’s degree in agriculture in 1982, he began research in natural dyes under the guidance of his father, Seiju Yamazaki. In 2002, he went on to receive his PhD in engineering research, writing his thesis on the colors and aesthetics of natural dyes and naturally dyed textiles. The Yamazaki family is known in Japan for their important cultural knowledge and their work preserving and sharing traditional methods of dyeing textiles. Dr. Yamazaki continues to share his knowledge and research by leading workshops, presenting papers, publishing books, and exhibiting his work, with not only Japan, but all over the world.

Kathy Klein is an artist based in Arizona (USA). She obtained a bachelors in fine arts and master of education degree at Arizona State University. Her body of work includes ‘danmala’, a meditative art process where Kathy lays gathered flowers in geometric shapes that look like mandalas; and ‘we kiss’ a public art project wherein participants are invited to put on lipstick and kiss paper leaving patterned imprints of their lips. She also collaborates with dosa from time to time.
