    Tomoya Arai Exhibition

Following last year, “AT THE CORNER” welcomes the wood carving artist, Tomoya Arai for his exhibition and sales event.

Arai is an autodidact in the handling of wood and lacquer. His creative process is full of originality and freedom. While his works such as bowls and spoons feature scars made during the carving process, each piece have a rough yet refined allure. His works are made to serve as “tools” for the everyday life and each piece is unique. During his time away from his creative process, Arai plows the field and enjoys living with what nature offers him. Please do not miss this chance to see his collection.
We look forward to your visit.

The artist is scheduled to be present at the venue on Saturday, March 23rd.

「I enjoy using my froe to carve wood. The rackety “me” disappears as a serene “me” takes over its place but once the rackety children come the rackety “me” returns, that’s when my wife comes by and remarks: it’s nice to see you guys having such a good time.」 — Tomoya Arai

    Crocodile Leather “Semi-Custom Order”

“SHOES and THINGS” in Tokyo and “CORNER” in Kyoto will host a pattern-order event featuring items using crocodile leathers. Including new shapes, we bring you a selection of pieces which can be enjoyed throughout your “daily life”.

At A&S, we work with a Japanese traditional tanner who specializes in reptile leathers. Each leather is created by the tanner with more than 50 processes including tanning, dyeing and finishing which takes about 3 months. For the finishing process, a globally rare process is used to create leathers with softer textures. Being richly oiled to the core, each leather has an allure which deepens with continued use which is characteristic to A&S. Due to the uniqueness of the material itself, there are only about 20 companies worldwide who can handle them. Please come and experience the texture of crocodile leather carefully tanned by skilled artisans over time.

*Leathers used to make these items are imported in accordance to the Washington Convention. Not limited to leathers, all other parts will be put to use.
*Ordered items will take about 6 months until they are ready.

Kenichi Takanaka – Nanako Part 2

On top of a mountain looking over a lake, there stands a traditional house with no running water nor gas. In this self-sufficient environment lives the potter, the painter and the chirographer: Kenichi Takanaka. With his family and a dozen or so farm animals including goats, pigs and chickens, Takanaka expresses what happens in his everyday life in his artwork.

Once again, A&S is hosting Takanaka’s exhibition in Tokyo and Kyoto. Using a toreutic technique which uses a graver to hammer small circular patterns, Takanaka creates “nanako” earthenware and vases. Along with these works, his hanging scroll made in collaboration with A&S will also be exhibited. Please come and enjoy the unique world celebrating the fusion of meticulous craftsmanship and witty motifs.

At the bottom of the valley, dogs bark and monkeys squeak.
On top of the mountain is myself, practicing zazen with my wife nearby.
Without any sound of its wings, an owl silently passes by
the left side of my wife
to disappear into the glorious morning sun rising above the mountain…

From Saturday July 21st to Sunday 29th, &SHOP AOYAMA will be hosting the exhibition of Tamako Yoshii, the felt cat artist. Works in the exhibit will be available for sale.

“Small cats” made by Yoshii are palm-sized felines featuring humorous movements and expressions which only a true cat lover can capture and depict.

Yoshii’s works which will be presented at &SHOP AOYAMA are made with great care using the technique of “hair grafting”. Here, wool is put into small bundles to slowly cover the entire piece. The smaller the piece, the more difficult it becomes to recreate its lifelike expression and shape. Yoshii takes time and effort to bring each piece to completion. Respecting the artist’s pursuit towards its perfection, the collection which consists of 10 new works has been waiting for this opportunity.

With their soft coats and one-of-a-kind glass eyes that seem to glimmer with different angles, these adorable cats look as if they are ready to spring into action.

※ The artist will be around on Saturday, July 21st.

※ The purchase of Yoshii’s works will be upon lottery. If you are interested in its purchase, please fill in the lottery form which will be available at &SHOP from 12pm Saturday July 21st (the result will be available on July 30th).
※ For more information about the lottery, please refer to the instructions below.
